A Beautiful Deluxe Edition (2004-11-12)  I have been looking for a decent edition of this book for a long time and finally one has come along that is worth waiting for. The slipcase with the gold Tolkien symbol on it is leatherbound and quite thick and sturdy (unlike some other flimsy slipcased editions) and the book itself is fantastic. The pages are gold-edged India paper or 'bible-paper' which is not at all fragile (after all they make bibles out of it, not exactly a book people don't use often!). Christopher Tolkien's two-colour maps make gorgeous endpapers and set the book off perfectly. The book contains all three texts in this one volume too and all three are beautifully set out.All in all I would say that this book will have pride of place on my bookshelf and is well worth spending the extra on to have such a wonderful edition.
the "book" is brilliant (2004-08-03) the lord of the rings is a superb book, but surely some people have got more money than sense? i don't think i could bring myself to pay that kind of money.
Look elsewhere for your cherished copy... (2004-05-26)  Sure the deluxe series looks good externally, all matching hardbacks, ultra-slim (as a result of the paper used), but definitely not worth the price, full or reduced. I sent my copies back after finding many creases in the pages. I then purchased the set published by Easton Press in the USA. All their books are in full leather, Silk endpapers, 22k gold accents, gilt edges and printed on archival-quality paper. The set of the LOTR, Hobbit and Silmarillion cost only $280 excl. p+p. Okay, so they don't come in a slipcase, but they are truly of superior quality and much greater value for money than this 'deluxe' issue, or in fact, any of the 'deluxe' set.
Heirloom Quality (2004-01-14) I just received my copy of this edition of the book and all I can say is wow! It is VERY small (compaired to most hardcovers) not just in volume but actual size. I wasn't sure about the india (Bible) paper it is printed on but it is a very durable paper... As fragile as it feels. As far as people worried about reading it because of the paper, I say read it!! You would probally do more damage to a heavy paper than You would to this. Bible's are printed on this type of paper for a reason. It is a bit of work getting the pages unstuck due to the gold edge on the paper. My only complaint is that this is supposed to be a limited printing (only 1000 copies) And apparently this has been verified with the publisher... But nothing is mentioned in or on the book. Other than that it is a beautiful edition of the book and should be enjoyed! After all You can't take it with You when You die.
lovely (2003-09-21) i am very lucky to own a 1969 india paper, leather bound, first edition of this wonderful book. it is beautiful and certainly adds to the magic of the whole story. i am sure that this print run will mirror the quality. if a fan of tolkien, get it. well worth it:)
