Book Description

A unique family cookbook full of simple, delicious and healthy recipes by the school dinner lady who is spearheading a revolution to change the way our children eat
Synopsis

As a highly experienced dinner lady, Jeanette has long been at the heart of Jamie Oliver's revolution to change the bad eating habits of our children both in and outside school. As part of her campaign to improve children's diets, she has written a unique family cookbook full of tasty, healthy, inexpensive and appealing recipes that are easy to make and can be enjoyed whatever age you are! She believes in simple, traditional dishes with a modern twist, made with the freshest local and - where possible - organic ingredients. All the recipes are big hits from Jeanette's kitchen and are accompanied by personal anecdotes and comments from the children at St Peter's, the school in which she worked for years as a dinner lady. They include Pasta with Peas and Bacon, Meatballs in Tomato Sauce, Real Chicken Nuggets, Cowboy Stew, Toffee Cream Tart, Apple Cobbler and Muffins. This beautifully illustrated book also tells the inspirational story of how Jeanette became Britain's most vocal campaigner for good food for our kids. It includes her advice (after years of experience) on cooking for children at home, ideas for getting (even the fussiest!) children interested in and excited by food. There are also practical tips for busy parents to make life in the kitchen easier with notes on nutrition and advice for making meal times an enjoyable occasion; plus a list of resources and suppliers.
From the Back Cover

Jeanette Orrey is the school dinner lady who is on a mission to improve the food our children eat. She believes in simple, traditional dishes with the occasional modern twist, made with the freshest local and - wherever possible - organic ingredients. Now she's written a unique family cookbook which is full of tasty, healthy and practical recipes that are easy to make and can be enjoyed whatever age you are! All the recipes are big hits from Jeanette's kitchen and include pasta with peas and bacon, meatballs in tomato sauce, real chicken nuggets, jockey club salad, crunchy veg crumble, iced apple cake, jam roly poly, scones and muffins in a multitude of flavours.
The book also tells the inspirational story of how Jeanette became Britain's most vocal campaigner for good food for our kids. In a climate of rising child obesity, of an increase in the use of preservatives and pesticides in intensively farmed food, and of constant food-related health scares, The Dinner Lady's quiet food revolution reveals how to avoid these pitfalls and how to put Jeanette's simple ideals into practice. Also included are her tips, after years of experience, on getting even the fussiest children interested in and excited by food, both at school and at home; guidance for busy parents on how to make life in the kitchen easier; notes on nutrition, organics, obesity and the hidden dangers of processed food; and how to make mealtimes a truly enjoyable occasion.

Superb!!!! (2007-01-21)

Jeanette Orrey has finally written the book I have been searching for in years....I have 4 young kids and have been trying to find recipies which were good old fashioned meals like I was given as a child. Her values and beliefs regarding eating habits mirror my own - I have tried many of the dishes and the kids loved them (even the fussy child)!!! I am eagerly awaiting the second book arriving! Well Done Jeanette! Many thanks!
At last a book where the ingredients don't cost a fortune!! (2006-11-13)

This book is far and away the greatest book for those who are trying to manage a family budget but still want their family to eat healthily.I've been bought so many "cook" books in the past only to find that when I'm in the supermarket the combined price of ingredients that I may use only once makes the meal bad value and makes me reach for the easier and cheaper ready prepared option. These recipes are just what I've been looking for.Simple, clear, healthy and tasty and more importantly....Easy!! I'm no cook but this book has inspired me to think about my food and try lots of things from scratch.Jeanette is an inspiration to us all.
Brilliant Cookbook (2006-09-14)

This book is filled with standard English fare. The recipes are clear and easy and so far they have all been successful. I'd agree the portions are large. I feed 7 on the amounts for 4.
Excellent (2006-03-11)

Excellent book with really easy to understand recipes - be careful as the amount to feed 4 results in huge portions!

Home made chicken nuggets & Toms Sweet and Sour chicken a great success. A brilliant buy.

Definetly one for regular use (2005-07-06)

As a busy family of 5 with 3 demanding and fussy kids and an equally fussy husband I can assure you that this book and the receipes in it are going to satisfy everyone.

I wish this book had been around 14 years ago when we had our eldest son, it would have saved me a lot of hassle.
