Book Description

The Baby Shapes Book and Mobile Set has been developed by The Children's Project and supports principles established in The Social Baby. There is continued debate as to whether or not new babies are able to distinguish colour, but it is agreed that they are drawn to high contrast images. These simple books are specially developed to interest a baby and they respond to these books from birth. Baby Shapes one and two, use very simple (through to more complex) bold graphic shapes. Baby Shapes three consists of a range of faces and facial expressions. New babies may copy some of the expressions. Baby Shapes four develops the graphics theme, introducing simple everyday objects such as a cat and a dog. The books bring the parents and their new baby together in a shared visual experience, nurturing the important beginnings of reading and turning the pages of a book. The mobile is unusual as it presents exciting visual images that can be viewed (importantly) by the baby when lying down as well as an adult.

We tested these books on many different babies around the country. The comments from mothers and families was very positive. Best of all when very young, our own daughter Hannah was so fixed on one of the pictures she fell asleep looking at it! We were suprised that, without encouragement, Hannah still looked at the books when she was 18 months old.

About the Author

Helen and Clive Dorman are co-founders of The Children's Project. They set up the company following their experiences with their daughter Hannah. Feeling well read and well prepared for their new addition to the family (Clive has two older boys from a previous marriage), Hannah was what they come to learn to call, a sensitive baby (not a difficult baby). She remains sensitive and whilst this is a lovely quality in adults it is frequently misunderstood in babies and children. Helen and Clive write books that help parents understand their children by sharing experiences that both parents/carers and children can relate to.

Fantastic (2008-07-25)

I recently purchased this set and I am extremely happy with it. My baby is only 6 weeks old but he responds really well to the pictures in the books and to the mobile. The 4 books contain simple shapes and faces that are either white on black or black on white and the mobile is very easy to put together - I have actually hung the mobile parts off the arches on the baby gym so that he can look at them whilst he plays.The books could also be used as flash cards when he gets older with the name of the shape or object written underneath.This item was a really good price too.

We bought this for our son when he was born. He loved it and we loved watching him loving it! We have bought it for all the new babies we know. They also love it and their parents love watching them loving it too! Have got it out in preparation for our next little one and can't wait to see their reaction. A definite must for all babes and parents....

Amazing and fun! (2008-06-23)

I bought this along with Faces (Babys very first book) after reading reviews on amazon, because I wanted to find something that would interest my very young baby. Well these books are great. Baby absolutely loved them, especially book 3 with all the faces. So simple, but he absolutely loved it and it was so funny to watch all his little expressions and cooing noises as he stared at the pictures. This is a must for young babies and I have recommended it to all my friends!
