Synopsis

Chris is releasing a collection of eleven CDs, a DVD of "Dancing Down The Stony Road" and a collection of his paintings, plus photographic and written insights into the journey that spanned the creation of this epic release, all bound in a wonderful deluxe book package. The idea was to create an all-encompassing body of artistic work keeping pace with his new-found output and also his desire to approach things in a different and interesting way. Having created the cover of "Stony Road" and interpreted the cover of "The Blue Juke Box" the close relationship between his music and his painting was defined. This relationship was clearly leading in one direction, a ground-breaking idea to link the two driving forces in his life. The idea of "Blue Guitars" was born. This work includes eleven albums from Chris Rea in one book pack, 130 brand new Chris Rea songs inspired by the blues ranging globally across all his own interpretations of this musical form, songs that Chris believes are some of his best to date. He now had a body of work that would in normal circumstances have taken a decade to create; songs that conjured up all his favourite musical influences that had set him off down the road nearly thirty years previously. Instead of releasing all the albums in one go, or over a period of six months or a year, he decided to create something that combines his paintings with his music. Not out of some egocentric notion that his paintings and music would be appreciated in the same way, but simply that they are now inextricably linked. In order to underline the accessibility of the creation, he wanted to retail it at a very low price. As Chris aptly sums up: "Blue Guitars" is something I have loved to create, and has been eighteen months, seven days a week, twelve hours a day in the making and I have enjoyed every single second of it. The research, the recording, the writing has inspired me and I hope the enjoyment and fun I have had comes across. "Although I have been inspired by the blues, this is not a series of albums that is meant to educate. This is a collection of songs that, even if you have never even thought of the blues as being close to your heart, you can still enjoy because the roots of Motown right through to metal have their roots somewhere in the blues. I hope you enjoy it." The eleven CDs are titled as follows: "Beginnings"; "Country Blues"; "Louisiana and New Orleans"; "Electric Memphis Blues"; "Texas Blues"; "Chicago Blues"; "Blues Ballads"; "Gospel Soul Blues and Motown"; "Celtic and Irish Blues"; "Latin Blues" and finally 60's and 70's.

Timeless and genius (2008-05-22)

From the crackle and hiss of the first moment on the first disc through to the credits of the DVD this collection is, perhaps redefines, quality. Not ever a Chris Rea fan in the past - I have been an avid follower of all the Jazzeeblue material, and it is some of the finest music I've ever heard. It is so clearly a work of love and dedication which inspires, entertains, and even teaches - played by people clearly doing what they should be doing. Sometimes I get off on simply the production quality; other times I wonder how on earth they blended guitar and piano like that. Just a truly marvellous musical experience. At this price I will buy a second set so I can play it in different rooms. If anyone asks me what does 'genius' mean, I will refer them to this collection. Blue Guitars is jazz-blues that feeds off a new interpretation of a rich heritage and really does find a unique musical idiom. There should be a book about this recording - I feel I've learned so much about blues, jazz, instruments and even microphones.
awesome collection of original blues material (2008-05-08)

this collection of the many facets of the blues shows chris reas versatility with music and highlights his longstanding devotion to the blues and does not go down the usual route of rehashing old standards but refreshes the sound without losing its original appeal. amust have for rea fans and for afficianados of the blues
Wow!! (2008-04-19)

What can I say, 137 tracks plus a DVD is an immense piece of work, and the amazing thing is that every track is excellent - some of them are wonderful such as 'You Got Soul' and 'Nobody But You', 'There's No One Looking' I could go on and on. The trouble with it is that it takes months to get familiar with the album, so even remembering your favourite tracks is difficult. He attempts to have a CD for different styles of blues music. The result is less raw than Stoney Road, and may disappoint blues fans; but for Chris Rea fans it's like all of our Christmas's coming at once. On top of all this, the packaging is beautiful, Chris Rea's wonderful paintings illustrate the book which contains the CDs in the front and back covers.
Still an awesome talent (2008-03-17)

One of lifes great mysteries will always be why Chris Rea never smashed the American market, especially the South of the country. But needless to say, their loss is our gain. Without too much hype, Chris Rea is undoubtably one of the top ten finest guitar players ever to walk the face of this planet. To really see the best in Chris Rea you need to see him live, to see him jot about the stage, to see him immerse himself in his music. As a musician and song writer he is a massive talent, very underated by those who have not taken the time to injest just how fluid he is, people will mention how Jimmy Hendrix made his guitar look like it was a part of his body by the way in which he played it, if you ever get the chance to see Chris Rea play, then you will see from the outset that man and guitar form the ultimate bond. This CD set is a prized posession, each and every disc is total quality, the Blues has come to town in a way I dont think I could hear anyone else play them, Chris Rea's voice is both subtle and explosive, he plays with a passion and that comes out in all manner of ways. If you like the Blues, if you like an awesome guitar player then this album set is for you, if you like Chris rea, then this just has to be in your collection. An awesome product from a first class world stage performer.
