A testament (2001-01-23)

Mud, exhaustion, and no toilets is how Mitch Mitchell described Woodstock, but it had its moments as we find here on this long (but not long enough) CD. The first couple of tracks are not recorded at the concert, and it seems to miss some tracks of the original 3 LP set. This was supplemented by a 2 LP 'Woodstock 2', which is also excellent but maybe not available? The variety of this album is tremendous, but perhaps what comes through most is an 'honesty' of performance. Although, much of it may seem cliched or hippy clap trap for us, John Sebastion really means it! The songwriting and musicianship displayed on this album and by this generation is yet to be surpassed in my opinion. There are particularly stellar and career making performances by Sly and the Family Stone and Santana, both of whom are almost genre defining bands. The latter bought the biggest amps they could get in the local music shop! They also feature the youngest musician at WS, Mike Shrieve - what a drummer at 18 years old! Richie Havens improvised 'Freedom' ended his set (the first one at the concert) and is a brilliant piece of improvised passion. For purity and pitch perfect vocals see Joan Baez. For songwriting and second gig nerves see Crosby, Stills, and Nash who also made their name here. Jefferson Airplane and Gypsy, Sun, and Rainbows (Hendrixs pick up band) produce great dawn performances - this is in the day when things really weren't well organised! Hendrix set was mixed but these performances where he gets away from the tethers of inadequate percussionists are just monstrously good. He sums up the angst of the 60's generation in SBB, produces an all time best (?) PH, and then improvisises as only he can!

There's alot missing though - Ravi Shankar, Janis, Melanie, some live Canned Heat (stomping).

You've got to see the film for a rounder picture but somebody needs to release more material...

Anyone who wants to know about how to write or perform music must have this.

Recording quality is OK thanks to Eddie Kramer

This was a moment when all came briefly right for an entire generation. To give an idea of how important the rest of the world found this, even TIME magazine devoted a colour spread to it. Here in the UK we had a festival at around the same time -Isle of Wight 1969- which featured the reappearance of Bob Dylan, but even that paled into insignificance to the mighty Woodstock.

Seeing the movie is indispensable to enjoying this CD, but not all the tracks can be found from the movie and vice versa. The big winners at the time were, surprisingly, UK bands, especially the Who, Joe Cocker and Ten Years After. They were thought to provide a sort of gritty realism and fire which their US counterparts lacked. And they do sound good here. But listen, too, to one of the truly great unsung bands, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band which at the time had collected a horn section and a brilliant song - Love March. I love this version.

Other must listens are Sly and the Family Stone.. great music indeed, and an unlikely hit for what was basically a white middle class mass US audience.

Then there is the rise and rise of Crosby Stills and Nash, a phenomenon which will have most people of a certain age scratching their heads in bemusement - but CSN + Y ruled the roost for a whole year after Woodstock and a sweet performance.

Another great winner: Santana, whose epic Soul Sacrifice is a truly outstanding performance. Considering Santana's new found poularity, fans of the band would enjoy the fire here.

Don't expect too much from Hendrix on this CD, btw. He headlined the event but only had a pick-up band, and hindsight has given this performance more attention than it deserves.

A wonderful album.. makes you long for a collection of all the duff performances as well. Some of the bands that did not make it on the album include a motley assortment of would-be icons, including the Grateful Dead, Incredible String Band and Janis Joplin. And the big bands about to bestride the world? Well, Led Zep was up and running but, no, the band stayed away from Woodstock. Now there's a tantalising what might have been...
