I don't normally like board games... (2008-01-15)

I don't normally like board games, but this one is great. We have played it in various forms for about seven years now, and it's still as infuriating and addictive! And don't just waste it on the kids (though it's excellent for teaching them to be devious little strategists!) - it's brilliant for winding up all your adult friends. Just don't expect an eveningof Settlers to be a quick one.

Lying somewhere in between Risk and Diplomacy , this turn based strategy game sees you pit your wits against two or three opponents to amass a score through a combination of empire building and resource management .The board consists of hexagonal pieces placed in a set shape ( although the hexagonal board pieces can be randomly placed ) , and each hexagon is allocated a number ( again , randomly ) . Players can initially start out with a small contingent , and look through accruing resources ( governed by rolling two dice ) to build more towns / cities , or gain extra cards for other bonuses .The random nature of the initial board layout means no two games are alike . The trading between players is governed by their personalities and own strategies , and again , can be different every time . The game itself can take anywhere between 30 minutes and a couple of hours , depending on the nature of everyone's gameplan , as well as the inevitable slice of luck that rolling dice can mean .A game to hook your friends into , and the hours will fly by !
Thoroughly enjoyable game (2007-09-15)

I'll be honest - I love board games. So, naturally, I'm going to be biased when describing a game like this, which could easily be considered for 'Board Game of the Century' (Which century? You choose). However, a useful yardstick I can use in these situations is the reaction of my family to this, my family not being the sort who generally enjoy board games. The first time I played, the sheer size of the rulebook daunted me. However, once you open it, you'll discover that most of it is examples of how parts of the game work, for extra clarification. The rules may still seem overwhelming, but do not give up on it at this point. Within a few turns, the whole way the game works will begin to make sense, and, by the end of one game, you'll be an expert on the way the game works. So, putting rules aside, how does the game actually play? In a word, magnificently. Every element is clearly thought out, giving every player an opportunity to try different strategies, and, due to the fact that the board changes with every game, there is no one 'ultimate strategy' that will guarentee you a win, as is the case with so many other board games. It also gives you a chance to reconstruct your own economy - as resources have no fixed price, it really is an example of supply and demand - if one resource is particularly scarce, it can suddenly become immensely valuable, and, from game to game, and even from turn to turn, you can find the value of certain resources changing, noticeably.Trading is a large part of the game, and gives you a chance to develop your negotiation skills. When we play, we make a slight deviation from the rules, and offer services as well as trade - e.g. 'You swap me stone for wheat, and I'll give you the next wool I get.' It gives the game a whole new dimension.Overall, this game is, quite frankly, unmissable. The only disadvantage is that, after a while, you'll start to need food or sleep, and this game doesn't provide either of these. But, to be honest, I can survive without them, if it means one more game.

This game is awesome. It takes a little while to get all the rules down (particularly if you're introducing newbies to one of the expansion packs) but once you get the hang of it, it's a real treat.Things that are great about this game:-board changes every time, so strategies have to be subtly adjusted to cope with the new island layout.-every decision YOU agree to.. unlike risk, where other people can invade you, or monopoly, where if you land on someone's plot, you have to pay them, the majority of Settlers decisions (trades mostly) you agree to.-strategies evenly weighted. There isn't a definitive strategy to win, sometimes one strategy will work, sometimes others. Many decisions require a lot of thought as to which option to choose.-negotiations. loads of them. offering other players all sorts of combinations of resources to get what you want.-your stuff is safe. ish. Once you've got a settlement, it can't be attacked - you don't lose it. although if you're doing particularly well, you might become a target for the robber!
Fantastic Game !! (2006-04-18)

This is the best game i have ever come across. Easy to learn but requires lots of strategic thinking, everyone i have played with has been captivated by it...from age 9 to 64 ! Gets you thinking and planning right from the set up, and the ever changing layout of the board was such a stroke of genius and makes each game different and unpredictable. Although you can only play with 3/4 players (unless you buy the extension pack) we have also found it a good game to play in teams of 2 as well as there is always plenty of planning and scheming that can be enjoyed with your partner.I love the fact that everyone is engaged pretty much all the time, no boring waits in this game for your turn to come. My only small complaint is that it is easy to knock the tiles and make the board a bit wonky.....manufacturers this should be easy to resolve, come on....make it just perfect.
