Description
When Crowded House said goodbye to the world from the Sydney Opera House in November 1996, 120,000 people turned up to sing along, cry, and wave goodbye to the band that for many produced some the most inspiring music they'd ever heard.
Made up of four songs from each of the Crowded House releases plus three additional tracks, RECURRING DREAM is an essential primer for newcomers. The strength of the songwriting, the beauty of the harmonies, the intelligence of the lyrics--all Crowded House givens by this point--are evident on songafter song. Old favourites "Don't Dream It's Over", "BetterBe Home Soon", and "I Feel Possessed" demonstrate that NeilFinn wrote a great song right from the offing. After working with producer Mitchell Froom for seven years, Crowded House changed direction and hired former Killing Joke member Youth, a move that brought about more of a world-music flavour. The swirling "Pineapple Head", haunting "Private Universe",and "Distant Sun", the group's last single, are three of the beneficiaries of this later partnership. RECURRING DREAM is a must-buy for anyone who ever loved a great pop song.

All Gold (2008-04-10) Like many of the reviewers I spent part of my childhood with my mum and step dad playing Crowded House every other hour. At the time I was far to obsessed with keeping my attempted image to want anything to do with what my mum liked. Now over ten years on I noticed this CD for cheap on Amazon and recalled some of the songs in my head which was just enough to tempt me into a purchase. I am glad I did. I can honestly say that of all my music as an overall album this greatest hits has to be one of the best CD's I own. This is one of the few CD's where I can put it on and have the certainty that every song I hear will excel. If you like me ignored this band in the 90's due to being too young to appreciate the music you should definitely look into buying it now, I can promise it will be one of the best musical investments you make. Sit and watch the memories come back to a brilliant soundtrack.
FINNTASTIC (2008-03-20) When Crowded house wrapped things up after their farewell Melbourne concert in the mid 90's this is the CD that kept the music of the Antipodean band alive & kicking. Neil Finn was recently quoted as saying that Recurring Dream made it possible for them to successfully reunite in 2007 and still have a large loyal following. It spent 3 weeks at number 1 in the UK album charts and is Crowded House's biggest UK and Australian seller. The compilation is cleverly sequenced to highlight not just the big hits but also the lesser known singles and key album tracks - and although this means the chronology is all over the place it works really well. The real star of the show is of course Neil Finn's songs. By the time of Crowded House's debut in 1985 Finn had already honed his sonwriting skills in the successful Split Enz, with brother Tim, and his love of melody and classic songwriting shone through - especially on the gorgeous 'Don't Dream It's Over' - still one of his very finest songs. The big Woodface hits are all present - 'Weather With You', 'Four Seasons In One day', 'It's Only Natural' and the beautiful 'Fall At Your Feet'. But it's the lesser known singles that really shine - 'Distant Sun', 'Into Temptation', 'Pineapple Head' and the manic 'Locked Out'. As the sleeve notes say - 'you don't realise just how many Crowded House songs you know'.Of the three new tracks that were included 'Not The Girl You Think You Are' has aged the most gracefully - mainly thanks to its Beatley arrangement and Finn's best Lennon impression. This is still the best way to discover the works of messers Finn, Hester, Seymor, Hart and friends. Early copies came with a free live CD - if you can track one down.cw
Exceptional (2008-01-06) I whole-heartedly agree with the first reviewer's thoughts on this album. I didn't give them the time of day as a teenager growing up when most of these singles were released. They seemed so utterly MOR! 10 years on I picked this up cheaply and it's absolutely one of my most treasured CDs. This is a fine collection of beautiful, thoughtful pop songs performed by a group of talented musicians that you won't tire of listening to. Exceptional.
A superb album (2006-10-04) Crowded House are one the biggest bands to emerge from the South Pacific. I like listening to every track featured in this superb album(Recurring Dream: The Best of Crowded House). These include ballads such as Weather With You, Don't dream its over, Tempatation and many more. When you listen to the singles, it makes you feel good and filled with confidence. The music has a some kind of flow to it, with a powerful vocalist Neil Finn demonstrating his real talents as a singer, but a little overratted. Overall, an album recommended for anyone who has interest in indie music and something you will feel good when listening to the album.
The very best of.....All time! (2006-08-20) I first heard Crowded house when I was still in school, someone played it over and over. Many years later I accidentally caught the 'Farewell to the World' Concert on tv. I was Hooked! The next day I bought 'The Very Best of' album, it was the best decision I have ever made. Every song is a classic, not one of them is out of place, all complimenting the next. If you get the chance to find the rare double disc edition, you will find a 'live' cd thrown in, which is also a fantastic collection of crowded houses brilliant performances over many concerts. If you love this album as mush as I do, then check out the other albums, which have the best melodies and most fantastic lyrics I have ever heard. If you think they're good, then I can highly recommend Neil Finn's solo work and duo album with his brother Tim. If your a fan of live music, then also consider '7 Worlds Collide', a neil finn concert with artists from around the world including Pearl Jam's Eddie Veder and The Smith's Johnny Marr performing Some of Finn's finest work and music from the other performing artists. 'The Very Best of' was the album that started it all for me, I hope that the journey starts for you too....Enjoy....
