Amazon.co.uk Review

This two-CD box contains all 41 recordings Johnson made, including 12 alternate takes, and each cut remains a classic. This set's release in 1990 caused quite a stir, selling more than 500,000 copies and, on the basis of endorsements from Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, introduced a great number of rock fans to Delta blues. Amazingly, Johnson built his enormous legacy on the strength of just two recording sessions: the first session, in November of 1936, produced among others "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom", "Sweet Home Chicago", "Cross Road Blues" and "Walkin' Blues", making it perhaps the most influential single session in blues' history. --Marc Greilsamer

The complete recordings (2008-04-01)

I Have never felt the need to write a review before but that Robsome & Jerome comment, It has got to be a joke, hasen't it, very surreal, certainly made me laugh out loud! Anyway I have had this collection for quite a few years now, and it's outstanding of course, as anyone with more than a passing interest in the blues already knows, (cost a lot more when I first bought it) but I was just wondering if this is a remastered version, does anyone out there know? I might just have to buy another copy, at this bargan price for an important piece of musical history, why not?
For £3, buy it! (2008-02-08)

I'll keep this one short: The music isn't great and the recordings are often very scratchy, but for £3 you get to hear some of the most influential and groundbreaking music in history. Buy it for the history lesson alone if not anything else.
A dedicated box set to the genius of Mr Robert Johnson (2008-02-05)

An absolute genius, an incredible listen. A warning to anybody buying this box set: As has been said by other reviewers, the set has all of the recordings by Johnson, you will hear more than one recording of each song, and if you are new to Johnson, this will be pretty intense ( and maybe a bit dull). If you have heard Johnson before, then it's worth getting this though.Much as I love Clapton, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, etc, Johnson is just incredible: better than the lot of them, and the best guitarist I have ever heard, even above the great Clapton himself.
the blues (2007-09-18)

This is essentially my first foray into real blues. My interested has been piqued as a result of listening to the very groovy, quite bluesy "Safe As Milk" by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Sure, I've heard blues-influenced music before. In fact, many people will tell you that all rock n' roll is influenced by the blues. I would answer that with "possibly", but I would also say that much of the alt rock music of the late 80s and early 90s probably isn't. Nirvana, the Pixies... there's not much blues there. See, the blues has a groove to it. At least it seems to me that the best blues does. Playing in 4/4 time and changing chords on the beat ISN'T very bluesy.Yes, but the more obviously blues-influenced music I've heard before hasn't really made me interested. I've found the Yardbirds to be a bit watery, and Cream's most bluesy work to be boring. I don't like the Stones, and I never really got any of that BB King stuff that you see on TV from time to time. It was only really when I started listening to The Stooges and (as mentioned previously) the first Beefheart album that I became curious about the blues.I've talked a lot here... and not mentioned Robert Johnson once. Ok, well I'll talk about him now. The music on these 2 CDs is very good. But you do have to listen to it VERY carefully as otherwise the tracks all pretty much sound the same. If you do listen very carefully, there's some quite amazing guitar work going on, and to think that he was able to play these parts and sing at the same time is very impressive. I find it to be just a bit of a shame that he never recorded anything outside of this format. The most different song on this collection is "They're Red Hot", and that's probably my favourite. I wonder whether that's because I can at least tell it apart without hearing the words.I've heard a lot of these tunes before - Cream covers and such, and Johnson's originals are WAY, WAY better than any of them.I'm glad I've got this record, I will try a bit more delta blues, I'll listen to this from time to time... but I think I might seperate these recordings on my iPod to make more varied, bite-sized chunks of Robert Johnson.
LISTEN and you will learn! (2007-09-05)

this last guy is quite clearly not evolved enough to understand that these recordings are the only remaining documents left of one of the most talented young musicians ever to have graced this planet. It takes a keen ear to listen a level deeper and to want to do this.LISTEN AND YOU WILL LEARN. Thank you.
