Strong stories, great series (2000-06-05) These particular shows were broadcast when I was quite young, so I didn't remember much about them. What I did recall was that each Saturday my whole family would watch entralled to see what adventures would unfold this week. What also struck home was how strong the stories were. Lets face facts, the sets wobbled, the special effects were done on a budget of 27 pence and you had to suspend all disbelief in order to watch. But that is my point, the acting was so good, the scripts so tight, the dialogue so sharp and often witty that you could ignore the part of your brain that was saying "this isn't real". These two episodes are particularly fine examples of what I have just been saying. In "Orac" the race to find the super computer hidden with a man who vanished many years ago has real pace and twist in the tail (or tale if you prefer). The idea of Orac being the sum of all computers struck me as predictive of what the internet may become, years before it was a reality. The story of "Redemption" neatly ties up the burning question of where The Liberator came from. More fine acting and some nice logic to boot - who cares if some of it appears to have been shot in an electricty generating station. If this review does nothing else I hope it will encourage you to view some episodes. And don't worry about watching them in order, although it can help pull some plot threads together (particularly towards the end of season two), I think you will find that each of those excellent stories will hold up in their own right.
