One of the best Doctor Who stories of all time (2002-03-28)

After reading some of the reviews on this site I wasn't too sure about purchasing this title but I am pleased I did! This has to be one of the very best Doctor Who stories ever! Fantastic acting and direction make this a must for any fan. The twists and turns in the story and the shocking ending are superbly handled and I would recommend this to anyone, even if you are not a regular viewer. Now if only the BBC still made quality programmes like this...

Great start - then the Cybermen appear. (2001-12-10)

This is another one of those stories that starts off so promisingly only to rapidly collapse into nonsense and tedium after the first episode. The faceless, trooper melting androids are great as they make their murderous way about the caves. After that the story becomes non-existent as Cybermen blow things up and are blown up and then blow a few more things up before they are blown up. Oh yeah, Beryl Reid sneers too. In fact everyone sneers, even the Doctor. Well, it is Saward. What did you expect? Plot? Characters? Storytelling? Hah!

One of the best Who stories ever! (2001-04-30)

This is an absolute Who classic. Peter Davison is on top form, squaring up bravely to David Banks' excellent Cyber Leader.

The sets may look a little creeky by todays standards and you can tell it was behind schedule when they filmed it (characters hesitating before pressing controls panels because they know they're about to explode, one of the freighter crew stubbing out a cigarette and wafting the smoke away as a scene starts) but this is top entertainment and should be in every Sci-Fi fan's collection.

Great adventure with my favourite Doctor Who monster! (2001-01-06)

Earthshock is a classic Doctor Who. Long before he became the head of the Braithwaite family, Peter Davison used to travel the universe in a blue telephone box. On this occasion he encountered his greatest adversaries (forget the Daleks), who were planning to crash a space freighter into Earth. James Warwick was perfectly cast as the tough military type, much in the tradition of Sergeant Benton and Commander Lytton. Buy this video because the Cybermen are quite simply the best monster the series produced and Peter Davison gives one of his seminal performances as the Doctor. Not quite as good as Attack of the Cybermen, though.

The Cybermen weren't supposed to be like this! (2000-12-23)

After seven years the Cybermen were back. Unfortunately, a great number of the faults that made the previous Cybermen story so hugely disappointing have not gone away. David Banks is a great actor but his performance as the Cyberleader, whilst an improvement on Christopher Robbie's, is fatally flawed. It is clear that nobody involved in 'Earthshock' had the faintest idea what these villains were supposed to be about. The Cybermen, far from being the dispassionate, stoic ex-human automatons as created by Kit Pedler, have become comic strip, macho Machiavellians with all the idiosyncrasies of human villains. The Cyberleader, with his fist clenching, frequent exclamations of "excellent!" and other idiosyncrasies of speech is a far (and unwelcome) cry from the monotone diction and mechanical stiffness of the original Cybermen.
