Cliff's Forgotten Musical Masterpiece! (2003-11-14) It's often been said that 'Take Me High' is for Cliff completists only, but I think it's a complete gem of a musical and has been wrongly ignored for far too many years. So, it's great that it appears alongside Wonderful Life on this video double bill. Take Me High has a wonderfully barmy premise, it's true - I'll just cite Birmingham, Barges, and Brumburgers, and let you discover the rest! The songs are all fabulous, and Cliff is very watchable throughout. The film boasts a strong supporting cast, including Anthony Andrews, Debbie Watling, and the gorgeous Madeline Smith. The moral of the film is all about escaping the rat race and frantic city-life, in favour of personal happiness, and has a sweet little love story thrown in for good measure. Well worth a second look after being hidden for nearly 30 years!
From the sublime to the ridiculous! (2001-12-13) Wonderful Life is truly a great movie. Maligned slightly because by the time it was made Cliff was being eclipsed by the Beatles, this is not really fair. This might not be on a par with The Young Ones or Summer Holiday, but it's nearly as good. Susan Hampshire is so beautiful, she and Cliff make a lovely couple and play off each other well. The film has a lot of comedy in it, and Cliff has a talent for this especially in scenes featuring Walter Slezak. The stand out section is that accompanying the song 'We Love The Movies', which pastiches every type of film from Keystone Kops to James Bond and showing what a talented bunch of young actors Cliff, Richard O'Sullivan, and Melvyn Hayes really were. The same cannot be said of Take Me High. Cliff seems so square here in his banker's suit and in his little mini (That's a car, not a skirt!). The title track is quite good, but there is little to recommend it except Cliff himself and the delicious Debbie Watling. This is one for Cliff completists only. Brum-burgers indeed!
