Amazon.co.uk Review
Hal Hartley's films have long featured nuanced speech patterns; his characters often seem to be speaking in spite of each other rather than at or to one another. It's a stylised approach to film making that suits the quirky director and his committed, underground cadre of fans; in Flirt, he takes it to another level. Here, the same story unfolds three different times: a shifty lover tries to decide which partner to stay with, and ends up with a gunshot to the face. Shifting between locations, languages and sexual preferences--but keeping the dialogue more or less static--Hartley's film makes for an interesting experiment, but of interest to whom? Fans will appreciate the final sequence most, which features the director in a rare on-screen role. --Randy Silver

One for the fans (2002-09-03) Admittedly Hal Hartley is at his most experimental and self-indulging here but the film is still an absolute joy in his typical deadpan and drole look at personalities and relationships. Not one for you if you only like mainstream films but if you like the style and humour in Amateur and The Unbelievable Truth then this takes it one level further. The director describes the film as "light" which is just as it should be taken for maximum enjoyment - a playful look at the same story played out three different ways, for fun. In fact it's exactly as the title suggests - a flirt with storytelling. This is my favourite Hal Hartley film just because it's so unique.
good and bad and good and bad and good and bad (no, really) (2000-03-15) In Flirt, different characters (male/straight, male/gay, female/straight but cheating on the director) follow the same story, with the same dialogue, to different conclusions -- though all get shot in the face. Interesting, but tedious, as even Hartley acknowledges in a brief, weird Greek Chorus moment.
