This album defines Jazz-Rock (2008-08-30)

I heard a track from this album in 1971 on John Peel's Sounds of the Seventies and just had to buy it. It remained one of my favourite LPs until I put them away in a cupboard in favour of CDs and I've been looking for a CD reissue for years. Why has it taken so long? (I was also looking for Brass Rock 2 for many years before I realised this was probably the only album they made! The CD sleevenotes confirm this.) As for the music, the combination of the expressive jazz and rock rhythms with raw vocals is a perfect example of how the two genres can meld together. Every track has sufficient variety of texture, riff and instrumentation to be a mini masterpiece on its own. Play the album all the way through and you will feel you have listened to a great musical work. There is no weak filler material here: tight guitar work; saxophone and flute improvisation; a classy brass section; quality bass lines; solid ryhthms; raucous vocals, although most tracks are predominantly instrumental. There is plenty of jazz feel to the album, but with the rock base never far away. A genuine combination. I love it.
I WAS 19 WHEN I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM (2008-04-02)

YES BACK IN '71 I BOUGHT THIS DOUBLE VINYL ALBUM, AND READING THE NEW SLEEVE NOTES IN THE CD, WAS ONE OF THE FEW WHO DID. I WAS MIGHTILY IMPRESSED WITH THE ALBUM, BUT COULDN'T HELP THINKING THAT I WAS LISTENING TO CHICAGO'S FIRST TWO ALBUMS, HOWEVER THIS IS NO DETREMENT TO HEAVEN BECAUSE HEARING THE REMASTERED VERSION NOW IT STILL IS A DAMN GOOD SET MADE BY A VERY PROFESSIONAL GROUP OF PEOPLE AND I DID NOT REALISE THAT THEY DISBANDED SOON AFTER. SURELY AT LEAST SOME OF THEM MUST STILL BE IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS.
