Superb new twist on a classic tale (2000-08-21)

24 hours after the marriage of Marguerite St.Just to Sir Percy Blakeney, the Marquis de St.Cyr and his entire family go to the guillotine. To Sir Percy's horror he discovers that it was his own wife who denounced them and it is a shock which, compounded by the fact that she refuses to explain her actions, forces him to conceal from her (as from everyone else) his greatest secret. That secret is that he is the daring leader of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel rescuing countless innocents from death at the hands of France's national razor. When Citizen Chauvelin is informed that Marguerite's brother is a member of the League, he comes to England to blackmail her into helping him unmask the Pimpernel's identity. Torn between the life of her beloved brother or that of a faceless hero, she reluctantly submits to Chauvelin's demands only to discover afterwards that the faceless hero is her husband. Marguerite rushes to France to try to warn and save Sir Percy but, when Chauvelin imprisons her, the question becomes: Who will save Marguerite? Though only loosely based on the novels of Baroness Orczy, the spirit of this film (and the sequels) is perfectly in keeping with the original stories and the casting is inspired. From the second Sir Percy lowers his telescope and speaks the line 'Robespierre. Quite the dandy, ain't he?', Richard E. Grant makes the part undeniably his own - no easy task when following in the footsteps of David Niven and Leslie Howerd. Martin Shaw gives a scene-stealing performance as the most believable Chauvelin to date and Elizabeth McGovern provides a feisty, intelligent heroine of whom Orczy would have been proud. The supporting cast is also excellent (watch out in particular for the wonderfully monotone - and sometimes monosyllabic - portrayal of Robespierre). This fast paced, swash-buckling, action-adventure, period drama has something for everyone (and this video contains footage not previously shown on TV).
