Interesting Reference Source (2001-09-05)

I was writing a play about the Great War when the historian I was working with suggested this video to me. The film was shot in the 1930's and was made from both archive footage taken from the front lines of the first world war and from interviews with veterans in the 30's. The archive footage is amazing stuff, seeing real men suffering and fighting. It is only when you actually see footage of men being shelled and shot to pieces that you realise just how terrible the war actually was and how little we are taught about it today. There is footage of trench war fair and how they lived, from both sides. There is also footage of the war from the air. This sort of WWI footage is very hard to come by and should be obtained at all costs by anyone who is interested. We owe it to the men who died to know what happened and the interviews with the veterans are very frank and interesting, although camera-shy. You will not be disappointed.
