Amazon.co.uk Review
Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond--prematurely, it turned out. Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore, and Lazenby's subsequent career fizzled, yet this one-hit wonder is responsible for one of the best Bond films. In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan threatens the world's crops with agricultural sterilisation. Bond teams up with smooth international crime-lord Draco (Gabriele Ferzetti) and falls in love with--and marries--his elegant daughter, Tracy (Diana Rigg). Bond monogamous? Not at first; after all he has Blofeld's harem to seduce. Lazenby hasn't the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence. Rigg, fresh from playing sexy Emma Peel in The Avengers, matches 007 in every way. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences with a kinetic finesse and a dash of humour. Though not a hit on its original release, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has become a fan favourite and the closest the series has come to capturing the spirit of Ian Fleming's books. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com -- On the DVD: Affable and intelligent director Peter Hunt explains his ambition to take the series back to the original spirit of Fleming's books with this instalment. Out of all the Bond DVDs, his commentary track--interspliced with comments from other cast and crew members--is one of the most entertaining and informative as he chuckles over some of his more felicitous touches. Although sadly Diana Rigg is absent from the "making of" featurette, an older and wiser George Lazenby reveals how he acquired one of Connery's suits and went to the same barber in order to make himself look credible for the part. Hunt and others are disarmingly frank about how Lazenby's arrogance on set won him few friends. The late lamented Desmond Llewelyn, who played the boffin "Q", presents an amusing guide to the greatest gadgets of the series and explains how he can barely work a can opener in real life. The rest of the technical features are all present and correct and up to this series' usual high standards. --Leslie Felperin

THIS BOND HAS ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD (2007-05-14) Let me give it to you straight, On Her Majesty's Secret Service is an absolute 100% triumph. All the elements work well, firstly there is Peter Hunt's direction. Hunt should have been handed the Directors reigns on a Bond movie well before this. He adds action and excitement and blends this into the most stilted and calm manner. In truth On Her Majesty's Secret Service returns to the less gadget and comic book laden world of the like of Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice and echoes the Flemmingesque world of Dr. No and From Russia With Love. Those who don't like the first two additions to the Bond series don't flinch, On Her Majesty's Secret Service has a strength and style beaming with energy and excitement twinned with realism never seen in a Bond film before or since. This will always be remembered at George Lazenby's go at Bond. It will also be remembered as the Bond film that flopped at the box office. Well, on a budget of $[...] million and with worldwide grosses of $[...] million, hopefully the notion of disappointment will disappear. There is also the fact that the Video and DVD versions consistently outsell all other Bond titles worldwide. George Lazenby is an absolute revelation as Bond. I had my doubts but I was still interested to see how he did. Lazenby rivals Connery in the romantic and action scenes and he also does pretty well at the dramatic scenes. In truth he is the most underrated Bond. He makes a very believable Flemmingesque playboy. He looks good in a tuxedo, on ski's, with women, in punch ups and Lazenby is helped by a strong supporting cast. Diana Rigg is beautiful and belivable as Contessa, Tracy whom which James falls in love with, and eventually marries. Rigg displays a full range of acting and beauty to make her one of the most memorable Bond girls. Telly Savalas is a very creepy, chilling and enjoyable Blofeld. It could be said that he is the most memorable of Blofelds. There is also the return of M, Q (in a rather quiet outing this time) and Miss Moneypenny (heartbroken that Bond could marry anybody but her).If you add all the above and some of the finest action set pieces in motion picture history you have an idea of the scale of this epic. The Alpine sets, the Skiing and the bobsled chases really bring out the purest sense of adventure. The movie has thrilling ski chases, you really do believe the man can ski, and once more you take the ski with him and every thrilling second he experiences you experience too. This very much is THE Christmas Bond film (with all the snow and Christmas themes). But its the realism between the characters and the story that makes On Her Majesty's Secret Service work. By far the most underrated of the Bond films. See it for yourself and see what you think.A highly underrated Bond in which people turn their noses up simply because Bond is played by George Lazenby and not Sean Connery. Lazenby does a good job at playing Bond in my eyes. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the longest of all the Bond adventures and on of the best so look past another actor playing Bond and there is plenty to enjoy here.Thank you for reading mt review.
Ice to see you (2006-12-09) This is without a doubt my second favourite Bond film after Octopussy. George Lazenby makes a fine Bond, who is capable of beating other Bonds even though he is only in this film. This film is a very believable love story between Bond and Tracey and when Tracey's tragic death occurs at the end of the film, the impact is like witnessing Romeo and Juliet for the first time.
On Her Majestys secret cut! (2006-06-13) Regarded as one of the very best 007 outings,it is such a shame that after 35 years we still do not have a full version of the film for home viewing on DVD.Lets hope the latest re-issue has ALL the missing scenes & dialogue.Mr Lazenby & Mr Savalas give diretor Peter Hunt top drawer performances.Sadly Diana Rigg who gave TV's The Avengers such class & styled sexiness alas does not.The costume & hairdresser of Miss Rigg camoflarge her beauty..shame cos with their help she COULD have been one of the sexiest Bond girls ever.John Barry give this movie his BEST ever score,& even now his instumentals are still an insperation to many less talented working today.
One of the Best Bonds (2006-01-19) Simply fantastic entry in the series for me. There seems to be a love him or hate him opinion of Lazenby in this role, and no middle ground. Well, I for one think he's great in the role - unbelievably his first screen role and he acquits himself very well indeed. He's particularly good at the action scenes. Biff, wallop, crunch - there's a real energy to the fights that surpasses even Connery at his most dynamic. The story fairly fizzes along, and the locations are just perfect. The only real weak point is Blofeld's motives for his latest masterplan, but the film needn't be taken too seriously, it is after all meant to be fun. An oddity in the series, in that it doesn't strictly adhere to the prescribed structure of Bond films, but it's all the better for it. Bettered only by Goldfinger and From Russia with Love in my opinion. The extras are also well worth watching, although it is sad to see George being wistful about not carrying on in the role. The documentary on Q is good fun as well. Well worth adding to the ol' Bond library.
This never happened to the other fella... (2005-12-28) And so you come to this, George Lazenby's one and only James Bond film - the oddity in the series, but still no less spectacular. Just because Lazenby only did the one Bond film does not make this a bad movie, a common misconception.Sure, he's not very comfortable in the lead role, but that would have been something that came over time, if he had been given the chance. Instead he's merely passable as the hero. His coming and going is covered in much length in the bonus 40 minute documentary, that provides unbiased insight into the making of the film and the controversial hiring and firing of the actor. Still, at least he made an impact on the series. The action scenes here are full of amazing stunts, particularly the ski chase and the bob sled section. The movie starts off well, with a beuatifully filmed pre-credits action scene. And although that sets up a action packed film, the plot line, trying to track down uber-villain Blofeld, is over long, padded and skimpy. It's even more annoying in the fact that the film doesn't actually finish, as Blofeld is still on baddie duties in future Bond films, which really makes this plot a waste of time. Still, the Bond formula is in place, plenty of girls, magnificent set pieces and a delightful leading lady in Diana Rigg. It all leads up to the most shocking scene in any Bond film, and if you havn't seen this already, then it comes as a real surprise, a gut punch of an ending.
