Winding down (2002-06-01) Overall, less fun, perhaps, than episodes 1-7; though a loose trilogy begins with the deeply shocking 'A Special Mischief' which throws up some real surprises along the way. The production values, acting and writing are all up to the usual high standards, of course. It is the last episode that really stands out, though: it casts a chilling shadow across the rest of the series and culminates in the death of the King, forewarning us in the process that things will never be the same from now on...
Upstairs, Downstairs at its Best: hypocrasy, politics, snobs (2000-09-04) These are the episodes where Upstairs, Downstairs really becomes memorable. Financial temptations put the bellemy's in a bind that has parellels with peter mandelson real estate fiasco. Miss Elizabeth's self centeredness reaches levels that are dazzling to watch and perilous for Rose. And James' love life continues to cause difficulties for everyone. The hypocrasy and social commentary feel much more relevant to today than television drama set in the 90's.
