As good a space sim as you'll find (2000-12-01)

I-war is a fantastic game. It is not an arcade style space shooter like wing commander, this is perhaps as close as one can get to a 'realistic' space sim. You have a large ship with a crew of 50 and many of the things that you would expect the technologies of a spacefaring future to bring (such as automatically targetting lasers) but these do not make life too easy by any means. In fact, if I have a criticism of this game it is the lack of difficulty settings. This means some missions can seem nigh-on impossible, especially as you need to think your way through them. Just shooting won't do you any good.

Aside from the graphics much of the beauty of this derives from the newtonian flight model. Anyone who has watched the maneuvers in Bablyon 5 and thought 'I want to do that!' really needs to own this game. Because you have inertia you can slide past a ship in a flat spin to keep your guns pointed at it until you are sliding away backwards. It is an absolute dream to fly.

The missions are clever, if hard, and the plot keeps you interested enough to want to keep playing. If you like your space flying games, this is the king of the genre.

Complex and realistic (2000-08-18)

I-war is a classic 3D space-sim where you take a fairly large corvette through a series of missions. Be sure to download the patch, which, at about 13MB, transfroms the game. The attention to detail is breathtaking, with true physics and realisic control. On a 3DFX card (e.g. Voodoo2, Voodoo Banshee) the game takes on a new look: absolutely stunning. On the down side the ship is complex to control, and the missions can wear a little thin, but there is enough gameplay to keep you entertained for hours.
