Synopsis

Irish rocker Rory Gallagher is a talented singer-songwriter whose guitar powered rock is laced with a boogie woogie, blues sensibility. Sporadically popular through the 1970's and 1980's, Gallagher is filmed here in 1974, playing throughout his homeland of Ireland. 9 tracks including "Cradle Rock," "Bullfrog Blues," and "Walk on Hot Coals" are performed.

The best deserved better... (2008-02-13)

Rory Gallagher's integrity, humility and musicianship shines through a shoddy and amateurish piece of film-making. The lamentable editing aside, there's lots here to enjoy. God bless you Rory.
Not Surprised (2006-12-10)

Well I see the Editor of this was Tony Palmer and I remember him from the Cream Farewell Concert. Endless shots of Jack Bruce's machine head and Ginger Baker sweating. What Tony hasn't seemed to realise (ever in his life) is that a live concert is an interpretation and it belongs to the band not to the director. So stay wide capture the atmosphere and zoom in on where the action is. And for a rock fan and a Rory Gallagher fan (or Eric Clapton in the case of Cream) The main action is where the fingers are. So if Tony was given mastery of an adult video the we would be treated to endless shots of peoples earlobes and toes. If he reads this and want's to know how to do it I have a live video shot handheld, no special lighting, of the Mofo Party Band in a bar in San Francisco. Though I say it myself it captures the atmosphere just fine and the detail where it is appropriate. So in future Tony, Don't despise the 'trainspotting' instincts of the fans. Eric and Tony were two of the finest guitarists of our time and you have failed to capture that experience for all of us.
I'm cut up about this cut to pieces film (2006-02-11)

I and many rock/blues fans saw this film when it was first shown in cinemas and was extatic when found it was to be finally released on DVD. What a let down, it's been cut to bits with songs omitted i.e. I WONDER WHO, TOO MUCH ALCOHOL & BACK ON MY STOMPIN' GROUND. The order of play has been changed, and tracks not in the original film added. The editor Stephen Saunders shoudn't be let within 100 miles of another film if this is an example of his work. An excellent film has been ruined.
Classic Rory, Lackluster Cinematography (2004-01-11)

Whilst the Irish Tour '74 audio album is one of the finest releases from Rory Gallagher, I agree absolutely with the other reviewers who find fault with the footage from the tour - Rory's face ad infinitum with little sense of venue and amazingly little opportunity to actually see Rory playing the guitar.

There is thankfully none of the awful chromakey and montage work that was prevalent in this era, but the flow is broken up by backstage and down-time interludes which don't add up to a biography or even a substantial insight into the man. The feeling is that the filmaker wasn't confident people would want to sit through back-to-back performance footage, which I suspect many would in fact have preferred. It seems that few filmakers have the humility to reflect another artists work to that artists constituency - they always seem compelled to try and make their own mark or find their own angle.

Why 2 stars? (2003-12-18)

Nice guitarist - shame about the film shots remaining glued to Rory's face. Nothing wrong with his face of course, it's just that I'm a very long standing guitarist fan of Rory (I bought his first album on vinyl when it came out), I play a bit myself and would have really appreciated watching a bit more of his technique. I fully agree with the other 2 star critique - 5 stars for Rory - then, thinking about it, perhaps a bit less than 2 for the film editing.
