Stop wondering if Linux is ready for prime time. SuSE Linux 7.1 Professional is here. It starts with the elegant, upgraded graphical Yast 2 installation and maintenance utility which now uses Gnu parted to repartition a Windows drive on the fly. Yast 2 recognises most hardware as well as offering easier updating and configuration for complex programs such as Sendmail. It can even set up NFS for you.

This version of the distribution (it also comes in a personal version) is aimed at network and power users. It includes support for clustering and RAID as well an LDAP server and ReiserFS journaling file system. Consumer-oriented support for digital cameras, TV and video grabber cards as well as USB and the new Cups printing system. You get DSL Net access support and the 2.4 kernel is now standard. XFree 4.0.2 supports font anti-aliasing for gorgeous text which together with the font server for TrueType fonts and the now default KDE 2.01 desktop makes for a better, faster, more beautiful and easier to use Linux.

The 2,000 applications include the usual server software and utilities plus consumer software including StarOffice 5.2 , Koffice , Gnome and other desktops. Suse 7.1 Professional would be worth buying just for the amazing manuals, updated for this version. They provide more software tutorials and configuration walkthroughs than any other distribution. Great Distribution (2001-07-15)

Whilst not quite a newbie to Linux,(I've installed Red Hat, Caldera, Corel etc etc) This is certainly the most complete and easy to use distribution I've tried. The odd little translation funny in the manuals (from the German), but they are also very complete for the newcomer. Makes me wonder what 7.2 must be like!!!

Try them all, and now the Best (2001-05-06)

I have been useing Linux now for about 3 years, Readhat, Mandrake etc. Any way I upgraded my PC the other week, and install Mandarke 7.2 and it first time it booted up then after the first timer, all I got was errors. SO I install Radhat 7.2 it went on ok, but thier was no sound, and when I install a sound driver the PC get locking up, Redhat had to go. Any way I have a cover-disk of suse 7.0, had a go at installing that, it went on OK, every work Sound as well and I could shut it and and boot up agian. So I brought the full version 'SUSE LINUX PROFESSIONAL' and install it, great it work and it is buy far the bext I use. The only thing that did not do was to be able to add a user through yast, so I did it in text base .EG dos and that work.

Well worth it, even upgrading from 7.0 (2001-04-08)

Installation is easier, and the advantages are clear: Better graphics support. ReiserFS is a great file system which speeds up forced disk checks during reboots. USB support is great (for my Rio500!) It's worth getting the professional version for any power user, cause there's loads more to it, and installing from 1 DVD is fast and easy.

Wow and i thought windows was good. (2001-03-28)

Now i have been using windows for a very long time(Windows 2.0). And ever since Linux hit the OS market ive always thought of it as a toy OS not really to be used as a replacement but something to do. Wow i got a version of SUSE 7.1 Linux off a CD Magazine front cover and was totally impressed. Linux has matured extremely well and i am at the moment using linux to write this review. I am now going to purchase the Pro edition so i can fully install linux with all of it's apps. It's much faster supports everything and now with thanks to KDE 2.0 has a fantastic windows beater of a User interface. WOW

Excellent value for money! (2001-03-09)

The Professional version of SuSE Linux 7.1 is excellent value for money. I installed it on a Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop and all the hardware devices were recognized and installed properly.
