Synopsis

A blind man returns to a village, of which he was once very fond. Upon his return however, he finds that things have changed considerably. There are two factions vying for power and people are getting killed.....
From the Back Cover

The gentle breeze, the murmur of a babbling brook, the scent of plums, these memories call Zatiochi back to a once-lived village. But memories are deceivers and he arrives to findt hings much changed. The former boss, Hyoroku, has been reduced to a carver of statuses of Jizo, the Buddha of Healing, and his daughter Umeno has become a hostess, and, as she describes herself ' one of the bad ones'.

Control of the villageis split between a former travelling merchant Eboshiya, and his son Masagoro. Eboshiya befriends Zatoichi, and seeks his aid against Masagoro's minder, the drunken samurai, Yojimbo 'the crooked crook'. When a masseur is killed, amidst rumours that a large amount of gold has been secreted on the village, the two factions begin to size each other up. It is at this point that Masagoro's younger son suddenly decides his father needs more protection and calls on the services of the contract killer Kuzuryuu.

what the? (2001-12-15)

This is certanly got to be one of the more bizzare films I've seen this year. Annoyingly, the film seems to be full of translation errors making for an interesting but confusing little film. Buy it though, because whilst it may be difficult to understand, this film is great if you're looking for a challenge.
Zatoichi vs Yojimbo (2001-08-01)

The Blind Swordsman find himself longing for a peaceful village which he has visited before. When he gets there he finds things greatly changed and meet with Yojimbo (as always, played by Toshiro Mifune). The village is run by gangsters who have hired Yojimbo to their cause. But there are competing gangsterbosses in the village and they are all in it for the gold. The major villain has skimmed off the national minting and hides the gold in the village. Gangsters, Zatoichi, Yojimbo, and more gangsters make a try for the gold but somewhere a spy for the Shogun is hiding and waiting to punish the wrongdoers and return the gold. This film is funny and very humane in the sense that the meeting between Zatoichi and Yojimbo's cynical selfs make them both better people. or at least make them both very aware of their cynical ways. I highly recommend this film and think it is a worthy continuation of Toshiro Mifune's character Yojimbo's path and as always a pleasure to watch Zatoichi deal with what life has to offer him.
