Amazon.co.uk Review
With its first CD, Aurora, the 45-strong girls' choir Cantamus moves away from the traditional repertoire into New Age/classical crossover territory for nine luxuriant pieces by film composer Sarah Class. Class has worked with Zbigniew Requiem for My Friend Preisner and his influence shows in the sometimes detached, often rapturous quality of her choral writing. The album is divided into three sections, the opening featuring the title melody which combines electronics with timeless vocals in a way paralleling Vangelis' El Greco. A similar sound, though the remainder of the album discards the electronics, runs through the central Spanish Suite. Playing like the theme from a modern romantic epic film score, this will appeal to fans of James Horner's Titanic soundtrack. The finale section includes the 12-minute Symphonie Lumière, an arching melody filled with soaring voices combining influences from church chant and symphonic writing while echoing contemporary acts such as Adiemus and Enya. --Gary S Dalkin

The sound of heaven - mindblowingly beautiful (2006-04-07) Even if you only listen to track 2, "Summer Song", this album is worth buying; that is my favourite track on the album, although the others are exquisitely good too. Cantamus are a fantastic choir - they have that wonderful ethereal, heavenly, silvery sound that only a girls' choir can achieve; their musicianship is superb and they combine technical perfection in their singing with an uncanny ability to let the emotion of the music really shine through and captivate you. The marriage of Cantamus and Sarah Class's sumptuous score and orchestration really is a match made in heaven. This is haunting music that conjures up vivid images and has a tremendous spiritually uplifting quality. The sound quality of the recording is excellent and easily does justice to the music on a good hi-fi. My only gripe about the recording is a fairly minor one - and that is that I can't always make the words out that the girls are singing - although this will be resolved when I receive the sheet music for "Aurora" from Amazon in a few days.
A Truly Magnificient Work (2003-08-05) I purchased this album through Amazon's personal recommendations page. I didn't really know what to expect but it truly is a magnificient composition. In some respects it is like listening to Polish classical music composer Gorecki as his distinctive style is apparent to the listener from time to time. I must point out that those of you who know of Gorecki's Symphony No3 known as Sorrowful Songs should not be of the opinion that this composition is melancholy or brooding. Far from it. Track 4 - El Viaje (The Journey) reminded me of the soundtrack to Edward Sissorhands but on a much grander scale. The singing is magnificient as are the musicians. Playing the CD in my car over the weekend reminded me of sitting and watching a Henry Wood Promenade concert from the Royal Albert Hall. It was truly exhilerating, complex, yet easy to listen to but most of all it was refreshing. It far outstrips other "plain Jane" choral works available on the market. I sincerely hope these talented performers release another CD in the not too distant future. I hope you guys and girls and listening!! Do yourself a favour and by this. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Cantamus-Nottinghamshire's newest claim to fame! (2003-05-02) Having had first hand knowledge of the album and the music; I'm singing on it. I would recommend this to anyone who either has a passion for quality choral music, as Cantamus is an undisputedly brilliant choir. Or anyone who is into 'chillout' music, as the album was marketed as a meditation CD in Japan and sold really well. I may be a little biased, but give it a try; it is not only a quality purchase but it was made with love and dedication by very talented girls!
If you only buy 1 classical album this year, make it this! (2001-05-30) When I first heard Cantamus "Aurora" on the radio, I couldn't order it quick enough!. It is simply the most beautiful music that I have heard for a very long time. Certain tracks can even bring tears to my eyes. If you only want to buy one Classic Music album this year, this is it!
Beautiful - Cantamus must also be seen as well as heard! (2001-04-28) Cantamus sing on Aurora what is likely to be the first new piece of classical music for the new millennium. The girls sing with such perfection that the complexity and depth of Sarah Class's music is delivered with both ease and passion in a way no other choir could achieve. This debut album presents in the most beautiful way something that has never been heard before; the awakening of 21st century classical music. Cantamus is simply a fabulous choir without equal anywhere in the world today and this album is a definitive example of female choral singing.
