the best for it's price (2008-10-06) I bought this for my 450D after reading all the reviews on Amazon and lots of other photo sites.I then took it to Mull this weekend and got some stunning images with it. After getting some ultra sharp images I decided that I wanted to get a bit more of the beach in from the same place, so got my kit lens out. I got the nifty fifty off the camera, put the kit lens on and then dropped the 50mm on to the concrete slipway. It rolled about and I caught it, but I was petrified to look after all the bad reviews that stated stuff like "I gently knocked this against the wall and it fell apart." Well boys and girls, I dropped mine from 4ft on to concrete and it's still alive and kicking, with little more than a few sand grain sized scuffs. This lens, for the price, is simply amazing. I dont care that it makes a wee bzzz noise when it focuses. I also dont care if it feels cheap, because this thing takes images so sharp that you sit gawping at the images you get. The DOF is superb and can be utilised excellently to get pro looking images instantly. Yeah the Bokeh may look hexagonal, but so what. I bought the additional lens hood for this, and I think that took a lot of the slipway blow, but even still, it's fantastic.Try finding a brand new sharper lens for £70. I dare you....I double dare you.
Great lens! (2008-09-29) I recently bought the 1.4 (50mm) lens and despite loving the focus on it, i needed something more versatile. 1.8 was the answer - it's a fantastic portrait lens for crazily good price!
Superb, almost. (2008-09-22) This was the first lense I purchased for my 400D. I now have two additional lenses, but never tire of using this for low light or portrait shots. The f1.8 is great for low light conditions without wanting to use a flash or creating a stunning depth in portraits. For the price, it's an amazing lense. Only two things stop me giving it a full 5 stars, and none are detremental to the quality of the lense... 1) The manual focus ring is very narrow and difficult to handle at the front of the lense. A pain when you need manual (which, with the f1.8 aperture, sometimes may be required to find sharpness in the right place), and 2) it doesn't come with a lense hood, which has to be bought separately. I don't mind this so much except, it's fiddly (latches on, not screw on), and interferes further with the manual focus ring.Still, these are minor issues and shouldn't get in the way of this fantastically priced prime lense.
A definate must have for any Canon DSLR owner (2008-09-03) If you're currently undecided as to whether you should buy this lens or not, then stop. Just buy this lens right now! It is one of (if not the) cheapest lens you can get for a Canon DSLR, yet the quality is absolutely amazing. The image quality is great, very sharp. Bokeh is superb. It's a very fast lens, and works very well in low light. It's also very small and light, too. You'll be amazed at how much smaller it is compared to your kit lens. The portait pictures that this lens produces are fantastic, and the wide aperture provides really bright images with shallow DoF.There are a few downsides with it, but they really aren't anything major at all - just minor points. The lens doesn't feel like it would widthstand being dropped, as it is very light and the casing is made out of plastic. Don't let this fool you though, the actual business side of the lens is superb. The auto focus is also quite loud, but once again this isn't a big deal and I'm trying hard to think of negatives.Beginners may be thinking that the fact that this lens doesn't zoom is a downside. However, it's quite the opposite, as "prime" lenses such as this one are far sharper than lenses which have adjustable zoom. The fixed length will also make you a better photographer by forcing you to get more creative with your angles and positioning. So in conclusion, if you've played about with your kit lens for awhile and you're looking for something new - get this lens! There is no way you'll regret it.
What a bargain (2008-08-29) For less than £60 this has got to be the buy of the century. I brought one for my 400D and I must say I am very impressed. The build quality may not be the best, but the images are crisp and sharp with vivid colours. Every camera bag should have one.
