Amazon.co.uk Review

It's been said that Diana Krall is a more successful recording artist than she is a live performer, yet Live in Paris seems to have captured the best of both worlds. Krall has evolved into a performer of extraordinary intensity. She treats what is essentially a set of jazz vocal standards as a kind of musical performance poetry which reflects the subtlest nuance of every lyric; while her dark, seemingly effortless contralto is a near-perfect jazz instrument. This performance features Krall's regular band plus a vast orchestra that tends to detract (and subtract) from her under-rated piano playing, but there are still any number of highlights, such as "All or Nothing at All" and "'S Wonderful".

On the DVD: the additional features on this 16:9 DVD (which has stereo, DTS and Dolby surround audio options and which is PS2 compatible) are mostly excellent. The rehearsal footage is almost better than the concert, and some of Krall's interpretations bring knowing smiles to the faces of some of the female members of the orchestra. Of the two rather MTV-friendly video features, the first (for "The Look of Love") is superb; while the second (for "Let's Face the Music and Dance"), all aggressive lighting and nasty makeup, has Krall clumping around like a big-boned drag queen, but it's really the only fault in an otherwise perfect release. --Roger Thomas

Unique (2007-12-05)

As this DVD was issued in 2002, one might reasonably expect other DVD's of a similar type, by different performers, but of equally high quality to have become available by now. I have found none.
Almost a perfect gig? (2006-07-15)

The DVD is remarkable - live concerts seldom record this well in any form. The intensity of feeling generated on this show is fantastic - kind of sums up what jazz can be like when it is good. Who - for God's sake - wrote the Amazon review? Dark contralto... subtle nuances.... suspect the culprit didn't really understand what he/she was asked to review. They should get out more. This is a great DVD - if you like Ms Krall or have any fondness for fine performances of the American Standard Repertoire then you should buy this. It's a classic. And yes - thank you - we did realise she plays the piano too.
Big surprise (2004-08-10)

I have been a fan of DK since she started recording. Therefor I had great expectations of her concert in Amsterdam during the same tour as this Paris concert. But what a great disappointment the concert was. In Amsterdam she rushed through her repertoire as if she was had to catch a plane or something. Imagine my surprise when I first watched this DVD. DK was actually funny, sparkling and easy-going and her performances of most songs a great. Just as I had hoped she would be in Amsterdam.
Excellent! (2004-05-04)

Everything from the camera shots to the surround sound is brilliantly done. The passion of the musicians, especially during solos is fantastic. I was a bit disappointed with some of the track selection however, theres no fly me to the moon, charmed life etcMust have!!
Fabulous.... (2003-10-20)

If you’re a jazz fan then this DVD is an absolute must. The musicianship and orchestration are first class as is the production on this disc. Diana Krall’s interpretations of these classic songs are in my view often better than the original renditions. It’s wonderful to see musicians so obviously enjoying themselves – the whole experience, particularly if you have the benefit of surround sound, is totally captivating and leaves you feeling on a high!

Definitely a 10 Star rating.
