Never Cry Wolf (2008-08-27)

I bought this DVD after i watched it on TV on a lazy morning off from work. I wanted to show it to my partner who loves wolves and i wanted to watch it again. The mixture of cinematography, documentary, soundtrack and rites of passage story was perfect and powerful. The music is by Mark Isham who has done many soundtracks for movies such as The Hitcher and gives this movie a meditative feel. The filming of a pair of Arctic wolves and their new family was from nature and not rehearsed. And the changes that the protagonist goes through by being in this environment and meeting the wolves and more importantly an elder Inuit make this very much like a traditional story. The Inuit actors they used are very good and they lend the film an atmosphere which is palpable. The story also illustrates the conflict between human and animal survival and does not pass judgement leaving it up to the viewer without, like so many movies these days, being heavy-handed. A gem.
