The Best of Humphrey Lyttelton (2007-01-23) Listen to "Feline Stomp" and see if you can keep your hands, feet and body still! This is only one of many superlative performances on this wonderful collection, a must-have for trad-jazz fans. On 'Feline Stomp' the band moves along at a relentless pace, but with grace, elegance and flourish. The crisp backbeat of the drumming, the Count Basie-like piano highlights and the driving bass make this one of the CD's stellar recordings. Other tracks feature Humphrey's masterful trumpet playing, and Monty Sunshine's soulful clarinet playing reaches to the very foundation of soul. 'Bad Penny Blues', 'Wally Plays the Blues' and 'That's The Blues Old Man' all rate 5-star, but then so does the whole darn CD! I live overseas and did not hesitate to order this treasure. It will provide many hours of listening pleasure, convincing any doubter of the notion that great early jazz came only from New Orleans.
Good Value Introduction to Humph's 1950s Music (2003-02-01) The first 12 tracks are the complete original LP "Humph at the Conway", a live recording made at the Conway Hall, London in 1954. These tracks are available elsewhere along with another concert recorded at the Royal Festival Hall, albeit at a higher price. The sound quality of the concert is not brilliant, but what it lacks in hifi it makes up for in enthusiasm. The remaining 8 tracks are studio recordings from the 1950s, mostly from 1955 and 1957 although "Apex Blues" dates from 1951. I particularly enjoyed "Waiting for Pickard" and "Fish Seller". Further compilations of Humph's 1950s recordings are available on Calligraph Records. This is a good value introductory album, although there was room for a couple of further tracks, and some liner notes about the music wouldn't have come amiss.
