Boys will be Boys! (2008-08-25) Accidental Empires (later made into a great TV production called: Triumph of the Nerds) is an eye opening view of the personal computer revolution and the who made it happen from an inside writer who knew the individuals. Robert Cringley does an exceptionally thorough job of providing a bird's eye view of the personalities, motivations, business environment and savvy of the nerds who changed the world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the entire book. One of the parts that sticks out in my mind is about how the personal computer revolution happened so quickly. Cringley points out that the personal computer industry was totally different than any other industry. The participants shared their friendships, work, and knowledge freely. This "free sharing of knowledge" was on of the primary the lynch pin that allowed the industry to explode so quickly. They shared this knowledge because it all started out as a hobby and many hobbyists freely share ideas. The nerds had no idea of the powder keg of an industry they were sitting on!Cringley points out a second lynch pin was the growth of the industry was partially because of the youth and exuberance of its participants. For example, he states: "In the PC business, constant change is the only norm, and adolescent energy is the source of that change."This is an incredible book for anyone interested in learning about the fascinating story of the start of the PC industry. The Re-Discovery of Common Sense: A Guide To: The Lost Art of Critical Thinking
superb (2002-11-12) As I work in IT this tape was a 'must buy' and I am glad I did. The history of how the PC market is what it is today is explained wonderfully by the very first pioneers of personal computing. Even more amazing is how comapnies like Apple, Microsoft, Compaq and Intel were founded some 20 odd years ago. Even if you are not into computers this is a must see. I agree with one of writers who said that there should be a follow up to this and yes it should be about Internet.
Accessible and informative to everyone - top stuff!! (2002-02-27) I too orginally saw a few episodes of this on Channel 4. Decided to get the video as it's a great reference and good price. Bob is a brilliant and entertaining presenter and the interviews are 1st class. This seems a straight copy of the TV series so felt a little disjointed, but this didn't cause a problem. The time period is historical and the interviews are about the people who shaped it. Buy this video and prepare for world domination!!!
Fantastic !!! Enjoyed the whole thing (2001-07-16) I too saw this on chanel 4 years ago and wished I had taped it. It takes you though the history of personal computing in terms that anybody can understand. I am amazed at how accidental some people founded their empires !!. I think bob Cringely has a good first persons view of these happenings. I would recommend that anybody with an interst in computing veiws this. I just wish that his follow up video was available "nerds 2.0.1" that charts the history of the internet ( i wish I'd taped this too !! )
Excellent documentary/soap of the PC history (2000-07-28) This is a couple of very entertaining tapes, which in a inspiring way documents the history of the PC, gives a picture of the development of the industry and the people who made it happen. This is done with many interviews and anecdotes. In Denmark where I live this subject has not yet reach the attention of the TV channels, so it was with great expectations that I bought this movie. I would also recommend reading the 'Accidental empires', which is the book version. Warning: Don't watch it with your wife and kids, it is more likely that pizza, coke and a couple of techie friends can share the enjoyment with you. But watch out, once you turn it on, you can't stop until the end! Three hours strait! ...
