Sadly Lacking (2004-08-16)

I was attracted to Airlines 2 for two reasons:

1. Spare Cash (Always a nice thing)2. Airbucks.

Fans of the aforementioned game will remember the simple world map where you could negotiate airport landing rights, routes and so on with "real" aircraft (including names) from the DC3 to the 747 and Concorde.

IT is true that Airlines 2 allows you to do that but it has several major flaws.

1. Even the biggest airports can only handle 5 aircraft/routes! It is therefore frustrating to those who would like to use the real world model of air travel and use a hub and spoke approach.

2. Aircraft crash - a lot. No matter what you try your precious planes plumment perfectly constantly.

One can overlook the lack of real names for the jets (after all with all that crashing aircraft manufacturers may sue for damages!) but still the inability to operate more that 5 aircraft to any one airport is most frustrating, especially if ine would like to be the next British Airways!

Airlines has redeeming features somewhere, but I have not played it for months - it becomes too frustrating.

I bought this, as i was a fan of Aerobiz on the Super Nintento, and have been trying to find a version of it ever since. On the plus points, it is an expansive game, covering teh whole world, and the competition elements (you v's computer airlines)in it are quite good. The downsides... It gets a bit slow, at one point, i had loads of money, and no where to fly to because i couldn't get any more flight slots. The other MAJOR frustration is that planes keep crashing.... I replaced all planes over 2 years old, and still kept getting eth annoying message "flight so and so has just crashed"....

If i was you, i'd look elsewhere.

Very Very boring - but it does help you sleep (2004-05-24)

When I saw this game I was very excited. It looked great fun and I could imagine myself inspecting my ever growing fleet of aircraft. However, once loaded I regretted my purchase!

The opening animation is fantastic. In fact, I give it 10/10! However, the rest of the 'game' is little more than a small, low detail map and spreadsheets and tables giving you information on your virtual airline. I didn't even have the courage to start buying shares!

Overall, there is too many figures and graphs. I can just about understand what the developers were trying to do (they didn't want to go down the cartoon type 'Tycoon' road) but I don't know who they actually think will enjoy this game. I would recommend you keep hold of your money and browse for something more interesting!

Airlines 2: not quite a high - flyer. (2003-07-31)

This is such a good concept. If only the developers had put a little more love into the graphics. The little videos, and the extremely impressive intro are very, very good. So why could that not be incorporated into the game. In the game, you can, with a little bit of skill, operate a world class airline, going everywhere and anywhere and suiting all customer demands. But you do this in tables of data that resemble an excel spreadsheet! The planes crash too often and the game gets repetative and frustrating. It also took a lot of effort to get it to work on my computer. Now I wish I hadn't bothered. The only way this game could get more boreing is if you had to watch the paint on your new planes dry.
Once it’s running it’s great (2002-11-26)

If like me you like the thought of doing ‘a Branson’ and building your own airline rather than actually flying or fighting in a plane itself, then airlines 2 might be worth a look. Gamers such as me who like an airline caper have been previously restricted to the ancient DOS based ‘airlines’ game which although good was basic because it was, well a DOS based game. ‘Airport inc.’, another good attempt left me just as frustrated as pleased by the game. The less said about the cartoon-like airline tycoon the better, so it was with some anticipation that I bought ‘Airlines 2’ in the hope that a well thought out sim could finally be entering this corner of the market.Similar in concept to the afore-mentioned ‘airlines’ and very reasonably priced, airlines 2 take a little getting used to, and to begin with it is very difficult, but believe me they have done a good job of this and once you are used to the various concepts of research/building/plotting it is very addictive.

Starting in a territory of your choice, your airline only has enough money for one or two routes, which you must nurture. Only when your approval rating (are your prices OK ? are the airports up to scratch ?) rises to a certain level and you have over 30M in the bank can you build a head office which allows you to build those transatlantic routes you dreamed of. Until then, very much as in the real world you have to concentrate on your own territory. But be aware ! There are other airlines out there, and if you find a profitable route chances are other companies will want to muscle in.OK criticisms. My only (small) gripe was that I wanted my planes to fly safely, but couldn’t seem to stop them from crashing a little too frequently. You of course lose lives, prestige and an expensive plane and this can really hold you back if it comes at the wrong time. I must point out that I almost had to send the game back as it refused to work on my system, even though I was easily over-specced for this game. Loading updated drivers for everything, I still had problems. Luckily for me, a few days later I migrated to windows XP from windows 98 and curiously the game ran fine after that.In short, if you like airport inc but got annoyed with the endless building of check-in desks, you’ll like this a lot.
