How rock is supposed to sound (2008-04-14) Raw, tough, fiery and polished. This album has to be one of the best around for all of these things. If you're into Led Zepp, Hendrix, 70s blues rock etc then this has to be in your collection. Not that the Black Keys sound the same as any of these people/groups mentioned, they've got a sound and a style of their own. But it's a good bet that if you feel music in your bones from that bunch then this duo with their stripped down sound and ferocious tunes will get to you in the same way.
keys that fit (2008-02-17) this is simply delicious blues with a sound only the keys can claim as their very ownfrom the opening bars on track 1 to the closing mellowness of cry alone this record is a piece of pure gold the more discerning of blues followers will no doubt find midnight in her eyes a simple ballad with Dan auerbach in true husky form with heavy supporting role going to Carney's cool drum beats also throughout this fine CDthe only fault i can find with the CD is its length leaving you breathless for more it could have maybe included the moan and the stooges cover no fun just to make it a full 5 star but hey I'm just a bit tight when it comes to reviews Clint once said do you feel lucky punk well do you get this in your collection right now
Bluesy rock 'n' roll to stimulate your soul (2007-08-15) I love these two guys. Although I still find it hard to believe that there's only two of them playing! This is real gutsy, grungy, soul-stirring blues music at its very best. Some wonderful belting guitar riffs accompanied by inventive drumming and raw vocals. "Everywhere I go" title track: "Thickfreakness" & "Hold me in your arms" are the highlights for me. (A little slower and slidier in the guitar department than some of the more heavy offerings here.)Grab your air guitar and let rip!!!Enjoy!Ernest the Goose
Heavy Soul (2006-10-16) This album was a revelation to me, and this review may end up reading like a love letter! When I first heard the Black Keys, I was hooked... Three instruments (drums, dirty guitar, growling voice) creating a wall of raw sound that to this day gives me goose-bumps. Describing the music is easy... its big, riff-driven, blues-based, soulful rock and roll. With exploding drums. And a vocalist who sounds like he's in pain. In fact, it's like Otis Redding as the front man in a group with Hendrix on guitar and Animal from The Muppets on drums. Yes, it's THAT good.Recorded with a patented technique to give it an extra authentic sound (fuzzy and growling), it sounds like a lost classic from the 60's that someone has found in a garage somewhere and blown off the dust. It's 10 original tracks (and 1 cover) of pure rock and roll joy, with melodies so catchy and classic that you can't believe they've not been written before. Please, if you don't have any of their albums, part with your money today. By tomorrow, you'll be writing reviews like this one. A CLASSIC.
Back to the roots but not back to basics. (2005-11-15) Many people will probably say that this is not really a back to the roots of the blues type of album, but to a more of a ‘rock’ audience this is. However in no way would I say this is a bad thing. The Keys are absolutely superb. Released in 2002 after their first smaller album ‘The Moan’ the Keys first full length album is sensational. Songs like ‘Busted’, ‘Do the Rump’ and ‘Countdown’ all seem to posses such energy. This is hugely helped by the great guitar and vocals by Auerbach and the drumming by Carney has you tapping your foot in seconds. This is definitely an album with more of an original rough bluesy edge than the second and third albums by the Keys (which are also superb). Must say I was a bit confused by the last track which is very much different from the rest of the album but I will leave that be to be analysed by the experts in this genre. All in all a great album.
