Amazon.co.uk Review
Few early rockers were more gifted or less honoured in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, A Black and White Night survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.
Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late 60s and early 70s touring band. That astonishing line-up is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honour Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances.
Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue-chip admiration society came as much for the calibre of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman", Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely", or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby". On this night, he handled all of them with fervour and finesse. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com

"I drove all night" (2008-10-04) The only compilation among a gazillion to span Orbison's Sun, Monument, MGM, and Virgin successes is a welcome add to the Essential series that now, post-merger, features RCA & Arista artists as well as Sony's. Roy Orbison is one of my absolute favorites. He simply may be the best rock 'n' roll singer ever. Amazon really should update the track listing to reflect the few re-recorded versions. While the originals should be here, the remakes are a legitimate part of Mr. Orbison's career. Roy's popularity was at a deeply undeserved lull circa 1987, when David Lynch used some Roy songs in his classic/eerie film "Blue Velvet." In the wake of renewed public interest, Roy released an LP of remakes called "In Dreams" (Virgin, 1987). It was very well done, an exception proving the rule that rerecordings are rubbish. The Wilburys, the live "Black and White Night," and "Mystery Girl" followed and the pop world was much better off for it. Then, tragically, Roy died in December 1988, rendering perhaps Rock History's best comeback bittersweet. "You Got It"'s ensuing Top Ten ranking in early 1989 is one of my all-time favorite chart events.
great (2008-08-04) just great, can't say i was a great fan. Liked some of his more famous songs, but!!! the sound quality is just great!!! just buy it you will love it.
Only 5 stars? (2008-03-30) What a man. What a voice. What a DVD. And what a cast list! How cool is this DVD? Very cool. That's how cool! Everybody takes a back seat here, yet somehow, they all come into their own. Bruce is obviously in awe of Roy, and Roy in awe of Bruce! There's lots of mutual respect here!Don't even think about thinking about buying it. Just buy, you know it makes sense!
Pure Orbison Bliss (2008-03-06) One of the main strengths of this films that it is not peppered with dialog and odd celebrities that evidently never saw Roy, describing his life and works. The presentation, recorded live at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, moves quickly from one song to the next. And even though the visuals are good it is the music that makes this well worth the purchase. If you have a favorite it is here. Songs are more than disembodied entertainment. As with most people they bring back memories or create new memories that are associated with them. We can see that they are more than just songs to Roy also. My favorite is "It's over".
Still Got it (2008-02-22) Being a Roy Orbison fan since Pretty Woman was on the TV when I was young in the 60's, I was ready to deffend this DVD, but I do not need to, the DVD is great, with a great line up of James Burden and Ron Tutt Roy still had it.With only a few changes to some of the songs Pretty Woman still sent a shiver down my spine. This is a must for any roy Orbison fan.
