Simply the best (2005-08-06) OCR-reading thousands of pages each day, with complicated layouts, this is the only program which offers sufficient quality and language support to be of use for our activities. What other better known OCR programs are out there I do not know, nothing I've tried has come remotely close, particularly in language support.
ABBYY FineReader 7.0 Professional (2005-07-29) Works very well with Umax Astra 4700 on wind 2000 or Xp. I used it to scan in text in 6 column and 6 cell tables. Very little or no editing was required after the scan. Also tried it on a Canon Scanner lide 35 but results were a disaster so borrowed umax astra 4700 off a friend.
Beats the competition (2005-02-06) Am using with Win XP and Canon scanner. An outstanding piece of software that integrates perfectly with Word XP and is capable of doing an excellent job with tables, pictures, and text. User interface easy to use. Minor bugbear in that seems not to store setting for own interface, prefering the TWAIN interface for my scanner. Does optical character recognition with ease. Assuming it works for your hardware - see ABBYY website if paranoid - a worthwhile purchase.
Best consumer OCR package (2003-11-28) I've used previous versions of Finereader extensively, as a volunteer for Project Gutenberg. This new version brings much improved recognition of text styles, and moves down to the Professional version some features which were previously only in the Corporate edition (features such as manual page splitting, which can be very useful when scanning books). The basic OCR was already incredibly good in 6.0, so it's hard to tell whether 7.0 has improved in this area, but the extra polish probably justifies the upgrade from 6.0 if you're a heavy OCR user. If you don't already have an OCR engine, or if you only have the one which was given away with your scanner, then this is a must buy -- Finereader is currently the best there is.
Finereader paid for it's self in minutes (2003-10-15) We got this program in our office to recognise pages from a large number of documents with mixed layouts and the way it accurately recognised the text and layout including pictures and tables was amazing. Finereader saved us hours of retyping.I have tried other better known software but this is outstanding in comparison – an excellent bargain!
