This recording captures the 1985 London cast that transformed an obscure French musical based on Victor Hugo's gargantuan novel of pre-Revolutionary France into a worldwide phenomenon throughout the late-1980s and '90s and became one of the best examples of the era's trend of blockbuster musical spectacles. Yes, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schoenberg's score tends to recycle its themes, but its beautiful melodies and stirring anthems rarely fail to captivate and touch its audience. Colm Wilkinson is the heroic Valjean, Patti LuPone is the tragic Fantine, Michael Ball is the love-struck Marius, and Frances Ruffelle is the despondent Eponine, with Roger Allam (Javert), Alun Armstrong and Sue Jane Tanner (the Thénardiers), Rebecca Caine (older Cosette), and David Burt (Enjolras) filling out the excellent cast. Fans will want to take note that this recording includes some material that was revised when the show crossed the pond to Broadway--"Little People" was lost altogether, while the "Love Montage" was significantly rewritten. Les Misérables sounds especially vivid in its 1998 remastering, and a synopsis and full lyrics are included. --David Horiuchi

The most heat tingling musical to grace the earth! (2001-08-11)

shonberg and boubile really outdone there selves on this one. les miserable has been my favourite musical since the age of 7 (now 17) this fabulous CD has made a My collection complete...The opening song to the finale...be sure be amazed...in this you will find humour from the theanidares...pasion from the love struck cosette, marius and eponine. you will find Gut wrenching kindness and compasion from the star of the show Jean Val Jean...and what is a show with out a villan...Officer Javert is the piest de resistance!!! Listen out for On my own, Master of the house, stars, empty chairs at empty table

I never get tired of hearing it (2001-02-09)

I have listened to the music for 16 years, since my mum bought the original soundtrack when I was young. I've listened to it ever since and never get tired of hearing the songs. I absolutely love the musical and after 16 years, I doubt I'll ever not want to hear it.

One Of The Best (2001-02-07)

I gave my copy to my sister as she's off to China for 2 years. That was yesterday, so today I had to go and buy another one. I can't live without it. I love this musical!! The original cast is still the best, even though I've seen it dozens of times. For all music lovers out there this is a must!!!!

This C.D is Food for The Soul (2001-02-03)

This C.d is my life line, I am addicted to everything about the musical and if I could would listen everyday. The strong beats feed my soul whilst the sad tragic story of Jean Valijean, the miseary of Cosette, the resentment of Javert, Maurius determination and Eponine lonely life tranfixes my brain. This C.D is a must have if you are going to see the musical so you can understand the complex,heartbreaking story and sing along at the same time, as I have done on numerous times!! Victor Hugo is a Saint to have written this magical story which has been woven into these spectacular songs.
