Amazon.co.uk Review

When Madeleine Peyroux's debut, Dreamland, was released in 1996, its success threw her for a loop. She's taken eight years to create this follow-up, and, at age 30, she brings a confidence and resilience to this dozen-song set. She's able to move seamlessly between songs by writers as diverse as Elliott Smith and W.C. Handy, whose title track was popularized by Bessie Smith. Though American-born, Peyroux absorbed the language and culture of France growing up in Paris with her French-teacher mother. On her debut, she covered Edith Piaf, and this time out she wraps herself around "J'ai Deux Amours," which Josephine Baker sang to the Allied troops during World War II. --David Greenberger

Enchanting (2007-05-28)

If you like the voices of Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald at their melancholy best then you'll like this CD.Madeleine Peyroux has the reputation for being an offbeat and thoughtful character. Maybe because she takes her art so seriously. Strange fruit that is essentially beautiful.
Original artist, new definition of "easy listening" (2006-10-30)

When I heard Peyroux' delicious tempo on her re-interpretation of "J'ai deux amours" and those delightful piano sounds on it, I was lost. And who would dare to cover Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love"? But she succeeds and makes it her own. Madeleine Peyroux has a marvellous "timeless" voice that brings you in another world or time. She creates a wonderful, warm and smooth jazzy atmosphere, with a country touch, indeed like Norah Jones, despite many differences too. And the occasional hammond organ is adorable!Yet let's not forget that you either adore or hate this kind of voice, there is no way in between. Many sweeeeet songs, not necessarily world class, but highly entertaining nevertheless. Redefines "EASY listening": very easy and pleasing to the ear. Always gives me a happy feeling! But the top of all for me is "I'll Look Around", a touching superslow jazz ballad with remarkable phrasing, which, in my opinion, beats Billie Holiday's original! And I'd like to mention the very nice lyrics of this song too!
Beautiful music (2006-10-25)

This album is a delight. All the tracks are slightly different although they all live loosely in the jazz/blues arena. Madeleine plays the guitar with a sure touch and her gorgeous singing voice is like Billie Holliday, only more so if that's possible. I defy anyone to listen to this and not end up smiling.
Beautiful and enchanting album by Madeleine Peyroux. (2006-10-15)

I purchased this album because I wanted to find out for myself what she was like. I heard her being played on the Michael Parkinson show on Radio 2 and thought I just had to buy it.I'm so glad I did. This is an astonishing and superb album full of outstanding arrangements and incredible singing by Miss Peyroux. I think that the songs that stand out for me are 'Dance Me To The End Of Love', 'You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go', 'Don't Wait Too Long' and the end track, 'This Is Heaven To Me'.In fact, I found that all the tracks on here are all classics in their own right and they are given a fresh and tantalising spin by the sheer tranquillity and relaxing sound from this nightingale's voice. To me, she sounds like someone from the 1930's, 1940's era. This is an album I can never get tired of. I can just sit back and listen to this album and let the sound of the wonderful instrumentation and vocals sweep me out to sea as they come through the speakers. I also own her latest album, the sensational 'Half The Perfect World'. Both of these albums are quite sensational in their own right. This one is a joy and a gem.
Give me more... (2006-09-01)

I bought Madeleine's CD just before I went to her concert with a group of friends so that I could recognise the songs. I admit it took a couple of listens before I really fell in love with the music, but now I am truly in love with this album. She has spent quite a lot of time busking in Paris and that is evident in the arrangements of this album. I find her to be refreshing in a time when there are so many so-called jazz artists out there who are not really. I am a hard-core jazz-vocalist fan and I find Madeleine to be a true, genuine, down-to-earth artist whose singing is heartfelt and touching. I love the arrangements - so simple and so good and it was this album that inspired me to go to Paris recently. I hope you enjoy it as much too.
