Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review

The screenwriting/directing debut of veteran British stage and screen actor Charles Dance tells of a pair of Cornish spinsters (Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) who discover a charismatic young Polish violin virtuoso castaway (Daniel Bruhl) on the beach below their home. The tale leads inexorably to tender romantic conflicts and a warm concert house finale. Composer Nigel Hess masterfully utilizes his background as Music Director and House Composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company to conjure a score that evokes its quiet, emotional dignity via neo-classical orchestral arrangements that feature real life young virtuoso Joshua Bell on solo violin. Hess' intimate original compositions form a virtually seamless tapestry with the story's requisite classical repertory choices, which range from Massenet and Debussy to Bell's delightful variations on Paganini's "The Carnival of Venice." --Jerry McCulley

Superlatives! (2006-04-10)

This is a very enjoyable film - well acted, great scenery etc - but what makes it really memorable is the music. Rather like the combination of John Barry and Mozart made the "Out of Africa" soundtrack unforgettable, so Nigel Hess's arrangements and Josh Bell's violin makes this special. If you think you already know your favourite top ten classical pieces, listen to the finale (after Paganini) and be prepared to think again!
Gorgeous! (2005-08-19)

I didn't see Ladies in Lavender at the cinema, but I rented the DVD one rainy afternoon and I loved the music so I was very pleased to see there was a CD of the soundtrack. Joshua Bell is an awesome violinist and he plays the delightfully accessible tunes from the movie absolutely beautifully. You get nearly an hour of music on the CD (it says in the notes that some of the movie themes were specially extended for the soundtrack) and it's all lovely.
Flowers blooming in film music (2005-08-04)

Fantastic music. A great mixture of exciting and relaxing music. Some very imaginative arrangments of classical greats. Every piece is composed with great thought, feeling and imagintaion. By far the most exciting and impressive piece is the "Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra", composed by Hess himself. Well worth the money.
Brilliant, but..... (2005-07-15)

Some of the most touching music I have ever encountered on a sound track, and most brilliantly performed. But there is one big disappointment. In the film there is a harvesting scene which is accompanied by a full orchestral version of a harvesting song which we used to sing as children. This scene was for me one of the highlights of the film, especially the music. But this music is not included in the sound track.
a heavenly chill out (2005-06-30)

I finished watching Ladies in Lavender and immediately ordered this soundtrack. It truly is a lovely CD; full of violin and other string pieces that I can only describe, in a somewhat worn out phrase, as music that transports you. It is beautiful and very relaxing with a good range of known and less well-known tracks. Had a bad day at work? Kids winding you up? too much on the to do list? then this is the CD for you. Alternatively if you're planning a romantic meal it would be the perfect accompaniment, who knows where it might lead...
