Coldplay were faced with a difficult choice as they set to work on X&Y. They could either follow Radiohead’s lead and use their enormous success and financial security as a springboard to a brave experimental future--or they could play it safe, repeat the tricks used on the 16 million-selling A Rush Of Blood To The Head, and consolidate their position as one of the biggest bands in the world. In truth, despite the Tetris-inspired artwork and presence of teaser track "Talk"--which steals its melody line from electro-futurists Kraftwerk’s gorgeous "Computer Love"--X&Y is more the latter than the former. Fans will be delighted by "What If?", a piano elegy that takes flight on strings, and slowly builds towards a Beatles' "A Day In The Life"-style climax, while the likes of "Fix You" and hidden track "'Til Kingdom Come"--originally written for country hero Johnny Cash--proves Martin’s skill for simple, affecting songwriting remains intact. One development, however, comes through the judicious inclusion of some rather pleasant synthesiser work--see "White Shadows", where Martin gently beseeches "Come on love, stay with me" over a gentle Eno-esque keyboard wash. Yawn..... (2008-07-04)

Anyone who claims to be a Coldplay fan and likes this album, clearly hasn't listened to 'Parachutes' or 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' two good strong albums, littered with really good songs like 'Yellow', 'Shiver', 'The Scientist', 'In My Place' etc... , whereas 'X & Y' has no good songs, the only half decent thing i liked about this album was one of the videos where an old lady is doing some acrobatic tricks.

great album and very powerful , i love all of there music , i think they are simply great .. this cd/album is as powerful and rich as all the others they have made .. ive got there new one on pre-order .. ive had my coldplay cd/albums for a long long while now and ive only just reviewed them ..thank u coldplay .see u ..

Look, I won't waste your time with a big lengthy review - I'll ge to the point. BUY THIS! You will fall in love with every track though not necessarily straight away, most are "growers" and you may find that a year after you bought it a song you hated in the beginning has really grown on you and you love it. Don't let the whiny naysayers put you off - this is AWESOME. It's all in the title, really:)

If you're here you obviously think you have a taste for impassioned, emotive rock. Music with depth, feeling and quality. The kind of music that stays with you past the first listen, past even the 20th listen. The kind of music that becomes an indespensible part of your life. Well, this is Puressence, not Coldplay.Only Snow Patrol and Radiohead at their best come close to Puressence. And it's a crime of the greatest magnitude that this band's name doesn't trip off the tongue as readily as 'OK Computer', 'Run' or (God help us...) 'Coldplay' when those "best of..." lists come round. Their fourth album, 'Don't Forget To Remember' eschews some of the open and melancholic soundtracks of their previous three and ups the ampage to produce a superb, almost wall-of-sound effect. It washes over you with James's voice a shining diamond in the barrage. It's a unique voice, to be sure, but utterly spellbinding. Please, if you're even a little tempted, just take five minutes and look at the reviews and stars for Puressence's albums. They are: Puressence Only Forever Planet HelplessDon't Forget To RememberThis is not advertising or sloganeering, Puressence have been the BEST band in the country for almost ten years. And thank you also, for giving me the opportunity to expand on my overtly biased view!Secondly, I think you are right, my post is not exactly a review of X&Y but most points of view on the album have already been covered and if it introduces even one person to a new band who plough a similar furrow to Coldplay then I feel it is worth it. As you say, if I wanted to promote Puressence I should do it on the Puressence page and you are welcome to read the reviews I have already posted there.Why, if they are so good are Puressence not as big as Coldplay? Mass marketing, major-label backing, tabloid fame and a pro-active frontman vs local Manchester band on their own small Indie label who, even when signed to Island, were treated as little more than a tax break. It's hardly a fair comparison.I am slightly saddened that you would use the excuse of something not being popular to mean it cannot be good.Also, I did not rate X&Y as 1 star as many people have done, I gave it 2 stars. Mainly because `Fix you' is a genuine classic; I even have it on my MP3 player. Neither did I rate it through any underlying hatred of Coldplay; I also own Parachutes and Rush of Blood to the Head, nor because of Chris & Gwynneth and their politics or class as some reviewers have done. I'm sure you have taken as much exception to those reviews as you did to mine.I rated it so low because I feel Coldplay on this album are so utterly generic. You can almost hear each song being constructed according to formula. It is musak designed to be played in the background not music written to be listened to. Coldplay are an inherently easy listen and that's not meant as a criticism simply my explanation of their style. I feel there is very little reward as a listener from Coldplay; they are the MacDonald's or elasticated-waist jeans of the music world. Puressence are a richer and perhaps in many ways a more complex experience but the rewards are greater for it and that's what I wanted to highlight in my review.Finally, I can say (having been dragged along unwillingly) that Coldplay are a truly excellent live band that I would hand over my hard earned cash to see them again.But Puressence are still much better!

turgid (2008-04-20)

I agree with sentiments expressed of Ben J Johnson. Whilst I never really got into the vast majority of 'punk' music in the late 1970s, I was nevertheless attuned to its ethic. Back in the late 1970s music fans of my age fought hard against the type of turgid drivel of Genesis, Pink Floyd and much of the rest of the 'progressive' scene that preceded punk. Colplay are the contempoary equivilent of the progressive scene. Their music is turgid, banal, insipid, dull and any other adjective you care to mention. I wouldn't wish this crap on my worst enemy.
