Synopsis

Following up his award-winning martial-arts drama HERO, director Zhang Yimou (JU DOU, RAISE THE RED LANTERN) tells an intricately detailed love story in the swordfighting epic HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS, set during the final days of the Tang Dynasty. A mysterious group called the Flying Daggers is a dangerous threat to the government, so police captain Leo (Andy Lau) sends his right-hand man, Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro), undercover to try to find the rebels' location. Jin, a notorious playboy, pretends he is a roving warrior called 'Wind' and befriends Mei (Ziyi Zhang), a blind dancer who is believed to be the daughter of the former leader of the Daggers. As he leads her across the countryside, they are 'attacked' by government soldiers--but these battles are staged by Leo in order to convince Mei that Jin is on her side. But when a general orders that Mei must be captured at any cost, the fighting turns real, and Jin must decide between his loyalty to his job and his growing love for Mei. Meanwhile, Mei battles her feelings for Jin as well, trying to hide her true self. Zhang's gorgeous, compelling film is filled with beautiful singing and dancing, marvellous costumes, and wonderful locations; the scene in the Bamboo Forest is unforgettable, as is the Echo Game, which Leo and Mei play in the Peony Pavilion. There are also twists throughout the film and by the time the end comes, audiences will be spinning their heads in awe and amazement at the never ending wonders of this special movie. The film is dedicated to Anita Mui, who was to have a starring role before her unexpected death.

Over Rated (2008-05-25)

Some people say this is a masterpiece. Only the last half an hour came close, the first hour is boring, unrealistic and tedious. There are two main problems, the first is that the acting is like watching paint dry. I can't believe Zizy Zhang was in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, (that was so much better than this). In Hidden Dragon she was entertaining. In this she acts like a scared puppy. Her fellow actor Takeshi Kaneshiro is atrocious, and Andy Lau isn't much better. The second problem is that apart from the end fight scene it's seriously unrealistic. Luckily the story line makes it watchable. It is very romantic and touching, so If you like that and a bit of action this is worth renting, otherwise don't bother.

A quite simply exquisite piece of art - beautiful beyond words - House of Flying Daggers is a fantastic Martial Arts / Love story obviously drawing comparisons to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon but this is different.Firstly, the scenery is even more beautiful - probably the most beautiful movie there is - draw dropping forests, visuals and the ending - wow.The colours here are amazingly intense, only second to Hero - another Zhang Yimou film more than worth seeing. The love story here is wonderful too, it develops extremely well to an earth shattering and powerful finale in which the ever beautiful Zhang Ziyi plays another perfect part, I am sure many tear is shed by the end. Some will argue the story isn't as deep as Crouching Tiger, and although true, the development of the three main characters adds to the spectacle of the film and I think having three main characters that you care about is much better than numerous anonymous individual added to spin-out the film.Any fan of the genre must see this movie, as should anyone who appreciates wonderful, intense and powerful cinema. Fantastic.
YAWN! (2008-03-30)

Don't believe the hype. Ok so it's pretty, so what! Takeshi Kaneshiro cannot use a sword to save his life...bummer for him. He's terribly popular in Japan for his pretty looks and even got his face on the Onimusha game character Samanosuke. But this film doesn't do him any justice whatsoever. The storyline was a real bore and the blind girl(can't be bothered to remember her name) is pretty and can probably fight but I am yet to be wowed by her abilities. She hasn't had much luck in her film roles has she?American dollars made it possible to advertise this well so everyone has heard of it, believe me this does not make it a good movie! This, crouching tiger and hero are all the same to me. Cashing in on a genre that has a massive following already just because they can't have any origional ideas of their own! If you have to watch a film of this ilk then Fearless is one of the better ones being that it's the closest to the epic martial arts movies that it so wants to be. I prefer the classics, Once upon a time in china, Twin dragons, Iron Monkey, Last hero in china...to name but a few.

It has to be said HOFD doesn't have the most enthralling plot, however i can't help but love this film. It is visually invigorating, one of the most beautifully shot films I think I've ever seen and it has a haunting soundtrack to match. Don't think of it as watching a film, think of it as experiencing a work of art.If you can, watch this in high definition.
