Amazon.co.uk Review

As one of many in the ongoing trend of resurrecting old TV shows and turning them into contemporary Hollywood product, Bewitched tries awfully hard to distinguish itself. It succeeds in lots of surprising ways, not least of which is the star power brought by Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. Even if they don't create the kind of romantic chemistry that would have elevated the already high concept, they act as delightful foils to each other, but more often to themselves. The conceit of this Bewitched is that it's a self-reflexive look at the entertainment business, with Ferrell playing Jack Wyatt, an actor starring in an updated version of the classic TV show. Out of favour with the Hollywood elite and desperately in need of a hit, he insists on an unknown to play Samantha, as he wants the show to be about him, since if something doesn't come his way soon, he's going to be hearing a lot of no's, despite the yes-men surrounding him. While his agent gets him the "unknown Samantha" deal, it's Jack himself who discovers his own leading lady in the delightful figure of Isabel Bigalow, who possesses just the right nose wiggle, not to mention other wiggles.

But wouldn't you know it, Isabel really is a witch, and exactly the kind of "good" witch trying to rely less on her magical powers that Samantha Stevens was back in her "real" world. Instead of a cranky mother like Endora, Isabel has a distinguished father, Nigel who lurks around her as a constant reminder that she can't be who she's not, and she certainly can't be the star of some zany TV show. As the plot thickens and the movie's reflexivity grows more convoluted, Nigel falls for the non-witch actress who plays Endora, and Jack and Isabel fall for each other. Here's where the Ferrell/Kidman gel doesn’t quite become aspic, but her perkiness and his goofiness are more than enough to make the entirety of the proceedings a delectable trifle. Director Nora Ephron has fun skewering her own business in the script she co-wrote with her sister Delia, and her eye for quality craft makes everything sparkle as it should. Even if we have yet to see the definitive remake of an old TV show on the big screen, at least Bewitched is well more than run-of-the-mill as so many adaptations have been, and so many will be.-- Ted Fry

Absolutely Dreadfull (2008-04-28)
1
Im sorry, but for a romantic comedy, this was absolutely dreadfull.I was literally sat there throughout the movie, sitting there thinking COME ON MAKE ME LAUGH!!! I didnt once!I was also really very disappointed by the way this movie wasted the best actress in the movie Kristin Chenoweth. She didnt get anywhere near enough screen time!A very very boring and disappointing movie!
Cursed film to Be Bitched about !? (2008-01-17)

Oh it was always going to be 'touch and go' when playing about with the idea of bringing back the much loved and deeply cherished 'Bewitched' - I am sure there was plenty of goodwill by the viewers, wishing and hoping for a rendition that could recapture the real MAGIC of the tv series. Nicole Kidman as Samantha was inspired casting - she plays the part very well and one can almost forgive the fact that she is NOT Elizabeth Montgomery because one can tell that she has put in a lot of work replicating characteristics, mannerisms and the downright 'niceness' of Samantha - the respect for the original is all there. The apperances of Michael Caine (father), Shirley MacLaine (screen mother) and Steve Carell (uncle) are very amusing - one feels that they really should have had bigger parts to play as they lifted the whole feel of the movie when they were in the scene. What lets this film down is the fact it is trying to be too clever for it's own good - a film about the making of a re-make of 'Bewitched' ?? The entire point of the 60's series was that it was simple. The new film tries to bulldoze us with the comic 'genius' of the day - Will Ferrell and wants us to see how unfair it is having to play Darrin, and thus play second fiddle to Samantha. The audience always tolerated Darrin because he set up the best scenes for Samantha. Surely it said something when the original actor in the tv series was replaced and the audience wasn't bothered or even noticed !?! This film is almost a film about 'Darrin' (or the actor playing Darrin in the film !?), taking the focus away from Samantha for too long. We then have to believe that Samantha falls in love with this jerk, most detestable man on the planet. It could have been so good - we all wanted it to be - but it was spoilt by Hollywood Producers who needed another vehicle to show us how 'wonderful' Will Ferrell is (maybe to Americans he is- who knows??)and a chance for Nicole Kidman to flex her Oscar Winning Acting muscles and be a 'Big Name' on the titles. It had all the right ingredients to cast an enchanting spell over the viewers - but it ended up vexing them, and hexing itself.
Not as good as the tv series. (2007-09-08)

I've seen this film about 3 times now and each time i see it it gets worse. Reason being is When jack and isobel do the show jack has all the comic lines whereas in the real show Samantha does, and she was in every scene so i didn't like that idea. Then Shirley maclane as Endora she could have put a bit of effort in to her part firstly changing her accent since Endora was British. When Shirley plays her she says her lines all wrong like 'deal with it, Derwood' In the real show she would never say that at least not in that way. If you want to watch go ahead but i suggest you only rent it out its not worth buying it.
Kidman's Presence saves an other wise average film (2007-07-01)

This film is even worse than Tomb Raider. It's a good job I wasn't shackled to my sofa with iron chains when I watched this, because I'd have had to gnaw my limbs off to escape being in the same room as this dreadful movie.
