Editorial Reviews
Amazon.co.uk Review

The title of David Gilmour’s third solo album may be some clue as to his whereabouts since Pink Floyd’s swansong The Division Bell. That period of near-silence has now given way to a flurry of solo touring and glorious charitable reunions, which are enough to make you forget it’s been over a decade since we last heard anything new from the band or its remaining members. All this has changed now with the arrival of On An Island.

Immaculately crafted with sundry high-profile guests, the album rolls along gently, only cutting loose on "Take A Breath" (reminiscent of "Yet Another Movie"). Lyrically, don’t expect any Floydian angst here; Polly Samson’s words are dominated by familial contentment and emotional warmth. This may understandably jar with the expected lyrical subjects, but it adds another facet to Gilmour’s persona. Musically, all of the trademark soaring mercurial guitars and crashing epics are in place, and there are moments of pure Floyd on the title track and "The Blue" both of which feature Richard Wright. These two tracks are the standouts, alongside the gentle "Smile", and rank among Gilmour’s best work, and help make this album as essential as anything from his former band’s catalogue. --Thom Allott

Considering,I hadnt indulged in listening or buying anything after the floyd depart or early David.I just fell in love with this album.I just had to have.Once you buy you'll never get sick of it.The songs are all so emotionally put together, simply gorgeous for me.

I have had this album since it came out and must admit what ever I say about it will not greatly influence too many people now. However, having played this album again recently over the last week, something struck me that you can hear this album in two ways. 1st way. "Achingly beautiful" with a soft restful sound coming through those speakers to 'sooth the savage breast' with cool guitar riffs from the ex Pink Floyd maestro and backed with smooth harmonies from Graham Nash and Daavid Crosby. 2nd way. Put the album on and it comes over as one continuous dirge so depressingly downbeat that the whole melancholy sound of the album could have you turning seriously to binge drinking or worse ! and wanting to slash your wrists or visit the priory! So Buyers beware !

After all these years David Gilmore is still coming out with new ideas. No doubt based on old ideas but, who cares. This is an excellent album, all really enjoyable tracks. The first track seems to be an introduction to all the tracks put together. 'On an Island' seems to have become a song that now sticks in my memory. 'Take a Deep Breathe' could almost be a Pink Floyd track, if there were a new album. The rest of the album is very Dave Gilmore, restful, beautifully produced, mixed and performed.
A classic that will grow (2008-04-09)

When i first got this album back in 2006, i thought it was lackluster and dull. However after a few listens it slowly became one of my favorite albums. Even 2 years on im finding new incredible things from this album, it just gets better and better. Gilmour is my favorite guitarist and he shows off his beautiful style amazingly on this album. There are some chilled out moments (smile, where we start), some rockier moments (take a breath) and some gut wrenchingly stunning moments (on an island) the guitar work, singing and songwriting is incredible. More please!!!
