Classic blues (2008-04-07) I agree with the two other 5* reviews already given for this EP. It is a truly superb piece of work. I can't imagine many other bands covering an EP of someone else's material and to do so you must really love it.If you like blues of any sort and especially The Black Keys then you'll love this. It could just as easily be an album of their own compositions. Pure blues magic. You even get a little message from Junior Kimbrough's widow thanking the guys for doing such a good job. Thanks guys (and Junior Kimbrough for the songs).
A gem (2007-11-23) I have listened to The Black Keys for years and, although thickfreakness was great, I believe they still havent managed to re-create the magic of The Big Come Up. With Chulahoma all of the intimacy and warmth of that record is restored. Its obvious Dan is a huge Kimbrough fan; the songs are lovingly performed at a leisurely pace that works really well. I liked Magic Potion, but I probably now listen to this Ep more than any of the other albums. That could be worrying since the songs are not theirs, but the execution of them is pure Black Keys. Enough of the Jack and Dan comparisons, they are worlds apart and as good as each other.
Just when you thought they'd lost it......... (2006-05-04) OK I will be honest, I found Rubber Factory fairly average and was disappointed in their new DVD, for me Thickfreakness was their last golden moment. So I ordered this with not much optimism but intrigued to hear them covering Junior Kimbrough (who I am not familiar with), and............IT'S ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!! It has a very unique chilled vibe to it while still having that g'ole Black Keys sound. Tempo is fairly slow on all the tracks while theres lots of long windy guitar instrumentals, it just makes beautiful summer music,, and it's a wonderful coincedence that the weather has been so good on its week of release.BUY IT! And, finally, I am extremely anti the whole 'Keys VS Stripes' thing, Dan and Jack are the most different blues based guitarists you can get, Jack's white-hot at rootsy stuff while Dan's much more inventive. BUT, now the Stripes have gone very wrong in their 'new direction' (and then split!) i can safely say in 2006 the Keys win!Right, now I'm off to check out some JK stuff!
