From the creator of The Sims comes the most ambitious video game ever made: here you don’t just control a single family or city but control an entire species from a single cell organism to a galactic conqueror. As impossibly complex as that might sound, the most impressive thing about Spore is just how accessible and fun it all is. The game is split into six evolutionary phases, starting with almost action-style gameplay at the microscopic level. From there you move to the creature phase on dry land, before going on to the tribal phase and the beginnings of society and technology. From there it’s onto the city phase, which plays a bit like SimCity, and from there to the Civilisation phase which plays something like, you guessed it, Civilization. The final phase takes part in outer space where by hook or by crock your species must reign triumphant.
Each phase has its own editing tools associated with it for things like vehicles and buildings. By far the most fun though is the creature tool, which allows you to create your own fully animated lifeform from scratch using a huge range of limbs, facial features and colourings. What’s also interesting is that the other planets in the galaxy aren’t all pre-populated by the game. Instead, by connecting online you can upload your races, and download those from other people, to fill the galaxy with civilizations from other players around the world. Any one of the six phases would normally be enough for any one game on its own, but this looks like it’s going to turn out to be the world’s first everything simulator.

EA deserve to lose business over this (2008-10-08) The DRM discussion has been covered very eloquently already. I'd just like to breifly add my voice to the debate by re-emphasizing that DRM, and this DRM system in particular, are uninstallable and use up your CPU cycles. You should get angry about this theft of your pc's processing power. Yes, it is minute, but every DRM installation steals a little bit more. Quite apart from the obnoxious and offensive assumption of your guilt.I was all ready to purchase this game as it sounds great but I refuse to accept the disgusting spyware that comes as a compulsory part of the installation, so EA have definitely lost at least one sale. Judging by the comments here, they have also lost a lot more, and I am very glad about that.If you went to a clothes shop and were told that you could not come in unless you had a security guard follow you around on your shoulder the whole time, even after you have paid for your goods, I hope you would be incensed enough to tell the store where to get off. If so, you should care just as much about EA doing the precise software equivalent. Tell them where to get off too, by NOT buying this game.
Don't waste your money on this simple, DRM ridden junk (2008-10-08) The gameplay is simple and no challenge at all. The DRM crap gives you just 3 installs, so you really are just renting the game - have fun trying to play it in 5 years time (not that you'd want to most likely). The people who pirate the game are getting a better game than the paying customers which is absurd. In my opinion it's money out the window; not worth your time. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere. Skip this title.
Bah, Securom got me after all (2008-10-08) Unbelievable, i avoid playing Bioshock on my new computer, due to the Securom fiasco and installing trojan nonsense on my computer....and spore goes and puts it on instead. I am furious that even after Bioshock, this kind of "limited installs" and rootkit hijacking is still going on.
Avoid Avoid Avoid (2008-10-08) This game contains crippling DRMs that invade your OS horribly, and turn your 'purchase' into nothing more than a glorified rentalDisgusting. Do not buy. Do not allow this kind of software onto your PC any more than you'd allow a dirty syringe into your skin.
S-poor support (2008-10-07) I actually played this game for a while before foolishly installing the upgrade to patch 1.0.1, installing the patch caused my pc to lose all sound in all games, there is no such thing as technical support in EA, the patch breaks your pc, unlucky.
