Product Description
In Resistance: Fall of Man, US and British forces band together in a last-ditch effort to save England from a horric scourge -- the Chimera. This parasitic species infects other life forms with a virus that rapidly mutates victims into new Chimera. In mere decades this race has ripped apart populations across Asia and Europe and by 1951 has landed on the shores of England. You play the part of US a Army Ranger, fighting alongside a group of British resistance soldiers to free the country from the Chimera and to halt their spread across the globe.
Amazon.co.uk Review
In the end it will probably be to the benefit of European gamers that the PS3 was delayed, since it will give Sony the chance to put together a much more impressive line-up of launch games than greeted the console in America and Japan. Resistance was easily the best of the U.S. launch games – a first person shoot ‘em-up from the creators of Ratchet & Clank. The game’s story is based around an alternate version of World War II where instead of Nazis you’re facing off against the insect-like Chimera in a war torn Britain (naturally you’re playing an American though). It’s basically Call Of Duty meets Doom.
The game doesn’t use the tilt sensors of the Sixaxis controller for movement but it does demonstrate the improved build quality of the analogue sticks, which previously made first person shooters difficult on the PS2. The tilt sensors are used in a variety of secondary roles though, such as when you have to shake off a monster or if you get set on fire. Despite the faux WWII setting, most of the game’s weapons are fantastical and, as with Ratchet & Clank, are probably the highlight of the whole game. All have secondary fire modes, from grenade launchers to homing bullets. The armour piercing Auger for example, also doubles as a shield. There are also vehicle based sections, including a particularly fun ride in an almost indestructible tank.
Although the single player game is well above average, the criticism about the sometimes generic art and design are not entirely without foundation. Thankfully this is compensated by an excellent forty person online mode – a huge achievement for a launch game and a very good sign for future online PS3 games.

Amazing (2008-07-27) What a first game on PS3, the graphics are better than most new releases on Playstation 3 and the gameplay is fun and addictiveMust Buy!
Gets good after a slow start (2008-07-21) I was actually quite suprised that this turned out to be any good at all, and considering I got it for a tenner it was fantastic value for money. It was actually quite long for an Fps.The story is reasonable all the way through, but the whole game starts off very slowly and is incredibly easy to begin with. I actually found it pretty boring for the first few levels as all the missions were so short and simple. There was always a feeling of 'is that it?'However, it does get much, much better as you get into it and it becomes quite frantic and challenging, especially near the end which I have to say was actually quite hard. Definatley doable, but I was suprised how quickly the difficulty ramped up.Everything about the game works ok. The engine is good, although it does feel quite strange and light at first. Think more Unreal Tournament (But slower) than COD4. The Weapons are excellent, and improve as the game goes on, but the enemies do get a bit samey and although they look unique, behave in a very similar way, and have a very similar pecking order to those in Halo. Very similar. The AI is also reasonbly good, but not groundbreaking at all.Obviously this is the PS3s answer to Halo and on the comparison front it does pretty well. It has all the enemies, weapons and gameplay to match Halo, but its just missing the atmosphere. The basic premise of the story has you (Hale) as an American Soldier that has been mildly infected with the Chimera (Opposing alien factions) disease. Yet nothing is really made of this apart from the fact that it means you can take more hits than a regular soldier. There are brief scenes every now and then outlining his struggle with the disease but nowhere near enough, and so there is very little character development with the main character. There is also a lack of decent non player characters. There is one that is okay, some British soldier guy, but you never really get much info on him.I think the game suffers from being based around missions. The beauty of Halo was that it was just one long game, so it kind of felt like you were in a sci fi movie. This constantly reminds you that you are playing a game though and so any kind of suspended belief is destroyed. All in all, its an excellent bog standard fps if you see what I mean. As good as they get. It just doesnt really leave you with a great sense of satisfaction after you've completed it as you never felt you were truly engaged in the story. 84%
a brilliant game! (2008-07-20) I got this game free aswell as motorstorm and ridge racer 7 with my ps3.when i first went on the game, i picked up the controls rather easily!the graphics are brilliant and the storyline is incredible!I thought this game would have some fear in it but suprisingly it didn't!which is good for people who are not fans of scary games. I say this game doesn't have any scary parts in it but sometimes it does like when your walking and your on a freaky level called northern command and your character has a hallucination about a creature!the story is about you, an american solider who has come over to the uk to battle the evil chimera! creatures with 6 eyes! (i think?) it takes you through all parts of the uk killing the chimeran forces, and yet you never get bored! the graphics are brilliant, you can see every little detail and the weapons are fantastic! you get everything from rocket launchers to flamethrowers and weird guns made by the chimera like the bullseye. the online loading is quick and the online gaming itself is brillant and fast. overall this game is awesome! a great first person shooter!
Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr?? (2008-06-26) Set in England... nice, good start I wondered if I would recognise any land marks (otherwise whats the point of saying its anywhere real?) but even 1940's england was more interesting to look at than this. My 2nd 'in box title' that I got as a bundle with Heavenly Sword (played HS first - played this 2nd). After Heavenly I was really disappointed with the visuals in this game. Very PS2, very grey / brown and very poor. I dont buy that 'brown and grey add's to 1940's realism' arguement. some of the 'wider' environments look very good, the skies and wider scenery for example but generally the levels look quite bleak and repetitive. On the other hand, some elements were really good touches and that made me think that the game had been rushed in development or something. The levels are very samey, where the enemies just get bigger faster and have better guns. To counter that your own infection makes you quicker and stronger against attack. Not sure why but I thought the Chimera looked rubbish - if they were infected humans, why would they get there own outfits and weaponry from space? where did the weapons come from, who made their outfits and why woulnt they just be running around like 28 days later?? and is there a wider set up for a sequel - I hope not. It was perhaps a good idea to mix the two typical types of FPS - WW2 (and now 3) and futuristic / space but I dont think they made a very good job of it all.The plot behind the game is quite good and cut scenes are good to follow, with narrative suggesting you are playing out events that have already unfolded. But there is nothing new here really, its simply a release title that was chucked together quickly to give us a taste of bigger and better things. At current values in June 2008 it would be good value for money, as its quite long (certainly compared to COD4) but quite repetitive as well so its easy to get bored.Unlike other games I own and have completed, I doubt I will play it through again.
A hit and miss above average affair (2008-06-22) Despite not having played this until a long time after it's release date, the game... whilst a good game, isn't really one to showcase what the PS3 can do. On first try it reminded me of the troubled PS2 shooter Killzone. The game is a simple linear affair, grab your gun, plow through the Chimera (the enemy, cliched-gentically modified humans that are superior to you.. damn), Checkpoint Reached, level over. Yeah it's not going to win any awards for originality, it's just tried and tested. Doesn't make the game a bad game, just not a great game either. The weapons is where the game shines, there are examples of weapons that are done creatively, a bit of a throwback to the old days of Quake II and Duke Nukem 3D where you would get totally over the top weaponry. For anyone who doesn't know yet, the game takes place in 1940's Britain, the locations of Britain and portrayal of olden-days Britain is done extremely well, with great level design taken in approach too. No offence to you Americans but it's nice to see a game in Britain :) The dull-washed out feeling in the colours is a nice touch to the games setting.A thing that does take this game from 3 stars to 4 stars is easily the co-op, from my days of playing Halo on Xbox, and Halo 3 especially, the co-op mode was damn fun, especially with 4 people and here it's just as great. Gotta love some co-op actionThis is a good game that can be enjoyable for a while, but it's not perfect and nothing mindblowing. Since the price these days is cheap for this game, it would be worth buying.
