A good product, but some hidden costs (2008-09-30)

I bought this item for use after my baby, but have used it myself prior for several nights during a severe cold. I have to say that I found the effects of using this machine very effective. I normally have extreme difficulty sleeping with blocked sinuses, but this product allowed me some excellent nights sleep. Although the product is definitely not silent, I can't say it kept me awake. It has auto switch off, so can be left on through the night and have done so myself. One tank full of water lasts approx 12 hours, so continues to provide relief right through the night without refilling. I used the product with some essential oils which are placed in a sunken well on the top-simple, but effective. The instructions to set up do look a little extensive initially, but I felt this was just because it was so in depth. Once I had used it for the first time, I have only made quick reference to it since. You do need to follow a regular, but easy cleaning to prevent limescale and algae build up. It does recommend a specific product for this, but also suggests an alternative using vinegar should you not wish to go to this expense. It does recommend that the filter is changed approx every 2-3 months, which if used often, I don't think this is too bad. It also recommends changing the filter when the product is not going to be used for a few days. This seems to be regardless of length of time filter has been used for previously, so this could work out quite expensive to do if used only occasionally. I do wish I owned one of these when my first child was born to assist him sleeping during his colds.

very noisy (2008-05-30)

The humidifier is easy to use, except it's very very loud. It's about as loud as a kettle boiling - I found it impossible to sleep with it on. The sound is effectively of the water boiling and being turned into mist/steam.If you were planning on using it at night... think twice before buying this.Very disappointing buy.

Excellent product, but not quiet... (2008-03-18)

This product takes some time to setup, with 15 minutes preparing the filter and waiting for it to saturate, etc.But once up and running it's an excellent product. This product has never leaked on me (compared to my other humidifier).However I was disappointed that I couldn't sleep with it on. It would bubble a lot. And since there's only one setting (on or off), there's no way to stop the loud bubbling. I would describe it like a kettle-always-boiling-on.

Great for Asthmatics and the common cold! (2008-01-26)

This unit has enabled us to have some sleep in the midst of a terrible bout of colds. Also both my daughters have asthma and as soon as the unit gets going their coughing and wheezing is much less significant allowing them to get to sleep. We now have 2 (one in each girls' room) and I think I will get another one for our room as I too have asthma, and it has been great for a sinus infection too! A must have for all homes.

Every new parent should have one (2007-03-30)

We have a baby boy with eczema and have to say that it has been excellent for his skin as it helps prevent the central heating induced dryness that can lead to itching and discomfort particularly in winter. It has also been a lifesaver when anyone in the family has a cold as it really opens up the airways (again particularly good for babies). In this respect, warm air humidifiers such as this model are preferable to the regular kind.The night-light and aromatherapy well are thoughtful touches too.The filters and cleaning products are expensive but worth it, in my opinion, for such an effective product.Use with caution in small rooms as it is rather powerful and can create your own "mini sauna" complete with water running down the walls!
