CD Description
Originally released in 2002 on the Sensation Record label, Among Friends has long been unavailable. It was the first of Jeff Healey's releases to feature him playing jazz as a guitarist and trumpeter. A household name as a rock/blues/jazz guitarist, Jeff's musical hero is actually jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, whose influence is apparent on this release.
Blind since early childhood, Healey picked up his first guitar when he was three, and began to play it flat across his lap, "accidentally" devising the revolutionary technique that became his signature style.
In 2004, Healey was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters (D. Litt) by McMaster University in Hamilton for his outstanding achievements in music and for his work with various charities in his community.
This album features several legendary traditional jazz players including the late R.T. Davies on sax and Dick Sudhalter on trumpet in addition to some of Toronto's best who went on to become members of Jeff Healey's Jazz Wizards.
