Medway Delta Blues (2007-03-05)
5
Kris Dollimore has a pedigree. Several years in Del Amitri, an album with The Damned, a tour with Adam Ant, and producing Eileen Rose. Prior to this though, his finest moments were as a founder member of The Godfathers, a band who still invoke obsessive allegiance amongst the initiated. But, now Dollimore has stepped out of the shadow of others to front his own project. It's not before time, as he is a hugely talented guitarist, and it's great to see him back on the scene. The album title refers to the date of his 12th birthday, when he got his first electric guitar - a moment that started a career. The feel of the album is very much of the blues, and is mostly his own material. Kris has always listened to the blues, even though it may not have shown in his rockier, punky past. But now, older and on his own, he is following a new path. Covers of The Stooges' TV Eye (slower but somehow more menacing than the original) and producer Stuart Turner's North Kent Post Industrial Hillstomp Blues vie for attention with Kris' own material such as the outstanding Brother Ray (a farewell to a now dead friend), Caned, Miss Emma Jane, The Enemy and the rest of them. Dollimore is joined on a couple of tracks by drummer Wolf Howard (a veteran of many a Billy Childish band), harmonica player Jim Riley and by producer Turner on his song, but much of the album is Dollimore alone in the studio. This is a fine fine album, from an artist who has been away for too long. If you knew Kris Dollimore before, you will want this album, but if he is new to you, and the blues is your thing, then take note of the name. If there is any justice, you will be hearing of him again soon.
