For fans of good guitar playing... (2008-03-31) This is great. Better than his previous solo album, and better than recent Black Crowes out put. Great guitar playing and sound, and it sees Burning Tree back together again, Mark Dutton and Doni Gray providing his rhythm section. Stand out track for me is Greazy Chicken - 6 minute instrumental with killer wah-wah work on it. Fantastic.
easily the best ex-crowe solo stuff (2008-03-03) If, like me you used to love the Black Crowes, but think that everything they've done since Amorica was rubbish; if you think that Chris Robinson's solo albums were feeble and Rich Robinson's solo album was okayish, although he can't really sing that well, then don't despair. Marc Ford has bucked the trend and proven to be still capable of producing brilliant stuff like this.
Flown the nest. (2008-02-18) Having followed Marcs career since Burning Tree I was eager to hear this album. Like the others, I was blown away. A pure and honest Rock n Roll album, this proves how right he was to turn his back on the Crowes. Dare I say it, this is miles better than ANYTHING they have produced since Amorica. Whats unusual is that it seems to get better and better towards the end of the album as opposed to the normal starting strongly and then tailing off as most albums seem to do. The standout tracks for me are '1000 Ways' (The greatest track Cream never recorded?), the sublime ballad 'Currents' and the cover of Willie Dixons 'Same Thing'.One of the strong points about this album is that it is far from being a self-indulgent display from Marc. Sure there are lots of red hot solos and licks, but never too much. I see the Black Crowes latest album is out next month. Im guessing no matter how good it is, it will have nothing to match 'Currents'.Buy this album and tell your friends to buy it too. It deserves to sell 20 Million!
Excellent Album, hits the spot (2008-01-20) As a Crowes lover, and liking Amorica as my favourite album, I was glad to see Marc back with the group at the reunion concert at the Filmore a few years back, and then dissapointed to see him leave soon after!I had contemplated getting this album for a few months, and once I got it regretted not buying it sooner as it is superb!Marc doesn't do a bad song! It's blues rock at its best & has the foot stomping for 65 minutes!Best tracks I think are 'Don't Come around', 'Just take the Money' & Greazy Chicken' (intro sounds like a variation on a track from the 3 Snakes & 1 Charm cd 'Let me share the Ride'.Buy it-it is superb!Talking of superb have you heard Chris Robinson's 'This Magnificent Distance' CD? That is brilliant-I had somehow missed that 3 years ago but now that I have it FANTASTIC STUFF!
great great guitar (2007-11-27) First time I've heard any of Marc Ford's solo stuff. This is a real raw sounding album, with no real production trickery - just a basic live sound. It works pretty much and really suits his style of playing. The songs are not too bad either. He doesnt have the vocal range of Chris Robinson, but this is not a strong criticsm. A couple of the songs are very reminiscent of Electric Ladyland period Jimi Hendrix (track 12 "the same thing" reminds me of the long Voodoo Child jam for example). It's sad that the Crowes have obvious musical differences, as together they made such good music. You just have to watch their live DVD to see that. A couple of the tumes on Brothers of a feather (also very good), would really be boosted by Ford's musicianship. All in all a good effort from Ford, it's made me want to seek out some of his other solo stuff.
