Certainly gets your brain cells moving! (2008-01-05) I bought this game for myself for Christmas as I really enjoy making my brain work a bit with maths, words and puzzles etc. but was rather hesitant to spend over £100 on a Nintendo platform and individual game. That is probably where the comparison ends as I have only seen the Nintendo version once before. This is a nice sized hand-held electronic set of 5 different games or tests for your brain to work on. The unit itself feels nice and solid and is very ergonomic - comfortable in the hand with the buttons in the right places although the keypad buttons could be a little small for some fingers. There is a basic leaflet that accompanies the games which attempts to describe how each is played. I did not find this particularly useful but having said that, the games themselves are fairly easy to work out. The leaflet explains what the buttons do, but unfortunately the 'New Game' button has not yet worked (maybe it needs to be pressed at a certain point in the game) and there is no 'End Round' button which is designed to "end the current round and calculate the score up to that point". There is a main menu with 5 different options: Braincheck, Training (this option leads you to the games), Score (check how you've done so far after each 'Braincheck'), Sound (raises or lowers the volume), Contrast (to make the images on the screen lighter or darker) and Memory (which allows you to scrub all scores and start from scratch). This main menu can be reached by pressing the 'undo' button when any of the five main games are highlighted. The games available are: Sequence - you need to put the various numbers shown on the grid into the correct ascending order using the keypad buttons underneath which correspond to the numbers. There is a time limit, so you may get it wrong because you were not quick enough! There are ten tests per game.Flashcard - you are given a simple sum and need to key in the correct answer using the corresponding keypad buttons. Again there is a time limit, so you have to be quite quick! There are 20 tests per game.Mind game - this is a game of addition and subtraction so you need to watch carefully and add and subtract as you go along. This is not described that well in the leaflet. Basically you are given a number and anything moving towards the icon of a professor on the screen is added, while anything moving away from the icon is subtracted. You get the idea after one or two goes. There are 5 tests per game.Word Hunt - In this game you are given a certain number of letters, often an existing word, and need to make as many other words out of it as you can find. You are given a target number of words to make and are on a time limit. There is one test per game.Recall - a memory game where you are given ten words and asked to memorise them in 2 minutes or so and then you need to recall as many as possible out of a selection of twenty words where you are only given the first and last letters! However, you can only play the recall part of this game after you have played 4 other games! All the explanations of the games above are for games at level 1 only and there are 6 levels for each game. You can check your score every now and again by going into Braincheck. For the higher levels you have for example more 'maths' for the Flashcard game and more words to find in the Word Hunt game. So far, I am still playing level one because some of the games are rather frustrating! At under £10 this is a great game to stretch you and increase your brainpower. One frustrating thing ... it would be useful in the Word Hunt game if it displayed all of the available words afterwards. Sometimes I just want to know how on earth they managed to make 7 words out of a selection of letters where only 2 are clearly real words!!For ages 8 years to adult, one player only.
Radica Brain Games (2007-12-31) Excellent excerise for keeping the brain active. The levels cater from level 1 - Easy, to level 6. some of the level 6 are very difficult, and require very quick thinking. Very good gasget. MD. Norfolk.
