CD Description

It might be three years since Aynsley Lister's last studio album, All Or Nothing, but in the intervening time he's released a live CD and for all of 2006 he made up one third of Ruf Records’ acclaimed "Blues Caravan" project. This took him along with stable mates Ian Parker and Erja Lyytinen to the deep south of America where the trio collaborated on the album Pilgrimage.

Now, fresh from the studio, Aynsley presents his latest offering. Every aspect and quality that his fans have come to expect are here, from the raunchy guitar and melodic voice to the infectious songs written about things we can all relate to. Aynsley has matured and honed his talent and on this release taken his first step into production, choosing to record all the tracks as live as possible, then add necessary overdubs after the fact. As a result every track has reached its full potential with the more bluesy material being as raw as possible and the more commercial songs having the live foundations to build on. The result is his strongest, boldest and most compelling album yet.

"Superb" – The Times

"His guitar playing is a fire hazard – exceptionally mature and exciting" – Mojo

"He’s got the chops, the looks, and the songs" – Classic Rock

"Deft lyrical touch and musical feel" – Zeitgeist

"Upside Down’ is a great album" – Guitarist Magazine

"Bursting with killer riffs and songs" – Classic Rock

a musician with his own agenda (2008-08-08)

I have seen Lister play an acoustic set live, then bought his album. He has his own agenda set it seems, with some clever lyrics, skillful guitar picking and contemporary vocals that could easily appeal to both blues and rock punters. Aynsley Lister, The Mustangs, Ian Parker, Ian Siegal are the names to follow on the blues circuit.Nothing Stays The SameSwaggerSplit Decision
Aynsley Lister - Set To Turn The Music World Upside Down! (2007-03-06)

In a career spanning nearly ten years Aynsley Lister has firmly anchored his place in Blues-lore. At the forefront of a new British Blues renaissance, Lister has always been uncompromising in his music, refusing to forsake the Blues for commercial success. All his hard work has finally come to fruition on his new release "Upside Down", the pinnacle of his career so far. The album is an audacious and passionate mix of Blues, rock, soul, and funk, all with Aynsley's distinct style. The guitar playing is impressive throughout, but it is Aynsley's songwriting that sets this album apart from its predecessors. All twelve tracks are penned by Lister, and showcase his depth as a writer as well as a musician and performer. Opening track `Find My Way Home' is a driving riff-based Blues/Rock number very much in the vein of previous Aynsley compositions, complete with an immediately catchy chorus. Other up-tempo highlights include `Getaway' and `Ice I'm Upon', both hinting at modern pop/rock influences such as The Stereophonics, but always with the Blues at the song's core. There are stronger references to Aynsley's Blues heroes in bluesier tracks `With Me Tonight' and `Disorderly Me' where comparisons to Clapton, Green and Stevie Ray Vaughan immediately spring to mind. Aynsley's gentler, singer/songwriter side is revealed on slower numbers `Always Tomorrow', `Rain' and the aptly titled acoustic `Beautiful'. The album is clearly a labour of love for Aynsley Lister, as even the smallest detail has been treated with great care, taste and imagination. The production quality of the album is great but takes nothing away from Aynsley's raw edge, his vocals are smooth, the guitar playing fluid and immaculate, and as a result the quality of his songwriting shines through. When he first arrived on the Blues scene he was heralded as a promising young saviour of British Blues. With "Upside Down" Lister has managed to deliver the album of his career, which has the potential to bring the Blues back to a prominence in Britain that it hasn't experienced since the 60s Blues boom. Surely set to become a revered essential in any Blues/Rock collection.

The quality of the production on this album and the technical brilliance of Aynsley's playing is exceeded only by seeing these tracks performed live by the man himself. For Aynsley fans this is a must buy and it's worth it for the title track alone. For everyone else; this man displays an energy and a talent which seems to know no bounds - miss this album and your life will be incomplete!!
