Good enough to suggest long-term franchise potential, The Bourne Supremacy is a thriller fans will appreciate for its well-crafted suspense, and for its triumph of competence over logic (or lack thereof). Picking up where The Bourne Identity left off, the action begins when CIA assassin and partial amnesiac Jason Bourne (a role reprised with efficient intensity by Matt Damon) is framed for a murder in Berlin, setting off a chain reaction of pursuits involving CIA handlers (led by Joan Allen and the duplicitous Brian Cox, with Julia Stiles returning from the previous film) and a shadowy Russian oil magnate. The fast-paced action hurtles from India to Berlin, Moscow, and Italy, and as he did with the critically acclaimed Bloody Sunday, director Paul Greengrass puts you right in the thick of it with split-second editing (too much of it, actually) and a knack for well-sustained tension. It doesn't all make sense, and bears little resemblance to Robert Ludlum's novel, but with Damon proving to be an appealingly unconventional action hero, there's plenty to look forward to. --Jeff Shannon

Synopsis

Matt Damon returns as amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne in this fast-paced follow-up to 2002's The Bourne Identity. Forced out of hiding as the result of an attempt on his life, Bourne fulfills his earlier promise to wreak vengeance on his former CIA employers, some of whom may be in league with murderous Russians. Brian Cox and Joan Allen are both great as warring agency chiefs convinced Bourne orchestrated the murder of two of their own in a deal gone bad. Thanks to tense, gritty direction by Paul Greengrass (Bloody Sunday), the plot stays tight, the characters believable, and suspense and thrills flow steady. Moody photography enhances the urban European locations, which--combined with handheld camerawork and fast editing--keeps the action realistic and CGI-free. Vividly capturing the fatalist flavor of Robert Ludlum's original novel, this is globalism noir at its finest. Franka Potente and Julia Stiles are back from the original, and the always dependable Marton Csokas shows up as one of Bourne's deadly fellow operatives. A rousing car chase through Moscow may outdo the ones in Ronin and The French Connection for visceral speed and length. As the icing on the cake, John Powell provides a menacing, ambient percussive score.

The fastest of the three with some new themes in the soundtrack - but get the box set (2008-05-28)

These red-cover editions were supposed to be extended but they weren't. That's the reason the "blue covers" stayed collectable. Supremacy is the excellent fast chase film with barely any lulls or wasted words and the soundtrack by John Powell has the largest amout of new material to accompany the theme.So avoid these red cover copies for the first two films and just buy them in the double box with the sky blue cover OR the very last DVD Box set with a black cover. Now that Matt Damon's doubtful to star in any more Bourne films, the black box set of all three films is probably the best value.

Better than the original - but do see them in order. (2008-05-19)

Can sequels be better than or as good as their predecessors...in this case yes! The story sets off 2 years after the first one, and once again spans the globe in location and plot. Jason Bourne is back, but this time he's been tracked down by both the law and and an organised crime syndicated intent in framing him. The man-hunt is bigger and the fight / stunt scenes better. It's another quick, fast paced movie that grips you so much it'll keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire movie.The characters remain the same and the continuity between this and the first movie is flawless.Top marks for this one - definitely as good if not better than the original

UNIVERSAL RIP-OFF!!! This is NOT Extended!!! (2008-03-23)

My copy plainly says "EXTENDED EDITION" on the cover. It isn't. It actually has far less features than the original too. How CAN Universal get away with this?!! THIS is why piracy doesn't carry the stigma it should - when GREEDY Film Studios blatantly rip-off the general public - why shouldn't we do it back.........?

The Bourne Supremacy is an exceptional thriller that is a sequel to 2002's The Bourne Identity. With Paul Greengrass taking over as director, The Bourne Supremacy still has a soft spot for traumatized children and interrupted romance, but the movie is structured so differently that it draws power to them rather than giving in to them. The Bourne Supremacy is such a breathless thriller, that amidst a sharp emotional exchange, it manages to sustain its deep feeling across an improbable amount of mayhem and violence. At the beginning of the film, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) pulls on all of our heartstrings, as he has to cope with the death of his partner, Marie (Franke Potente), performing this brilliantly. There are many unfortunate lapses throughout The Bourne Supremacy for Jason, and this high-paced, realistic movie will keep you hanging on until the very last minute. The end of the film, and the main climax, involves a high speed car chase through the city of Moscow. This film is a fantastic sequel, and it's guaranteed that you will want to watch this again and again and never get tired of it. Well done Paul Greengrass. A success? Certainly. Hannah Foote, aged 14. 5 stars.

A Great Action Sequel (2008-01-14)

The Bourne Supremacy picks up superbly where the Bourne Identity left off. It picks up the story as the CIA, having lost Jason Bourne and stopped looking, are set on his trail by an operation by a mysterious group who frame Bourne for a murder in Berlin. CIA officer Pam Landy sets off on Bourne's trail as Bourne, who promised to hunt them down if they came after him again, continues his search for his identity. There are more beautiful settings as new director Paul Greengrass keeps the atmosphere of the film very similar to that of the first. The action is as rip-roaring as ever, with a fight between Bourne and another part of Operation Treadstone in a kitchen one of the highlights. This is as good as the first film, and in my opinion cemented the Jason Bourne films as amongst the best action movies ever made. Matt Damon is in excellent form, and with a superb supporting cast, wonderful direction and action to get your heart racing, this is really a must-see. But I'd recommend you watch the first film first, and keep the third one handy, as you aren't likely to want to stop!
