squirrel proof (2008-07-09)

Having sppent much time and money repairing feeders ravaged by squirrels this seems to be almost 100% squirrel proof. I think the smallish size means squirrels cant get a decent grip and I have not found peanuts on the ground like other so-called squirrel proof feeders. It works in my garden.

I bought this feeder after squirrels chewed through my other wire feeders - for some reason they can't seem to manage it with this one! They still hang up side down and steal the nuts though. I haven't had any problems with the links breaking - even when full of peanuts and supporting an upside down squirrel! I'd recommend it highly and particularly at the price. Despite the squirrel interest the birds like it too!31 Aug 2008 - Amazon won't let me change the 5 stars, but if I could I would! After writing my review above my bird feeder promptly broke. Obviously the squirrels have got a bit well fed and have now reached the appropriate weight to break the chain. I bought two more - and yes the squirrels broke the chain again. So - if I could I'd reduce my recommendation to 3 star and recommend squirrel free gardens!

I thought it was a great looking feeder and seemed well made. I was WRONG!When filled with peanuts, or even only half filled, the chain that runs through the feeder (linking the lid) is not strong enough to carry the weight. The links in the chain keep on breaking, have now attepted to reinforce the chain, after three different replacements! The other problem is that the design of the feeder allows the nuts to get wet if raining. This then allows the nuts to go mouldy, which become poisonous. DO NOT BUY.
