Solar Battery Charger 12V (2007-10-04)

This particular unit comes with both "cigar lighter" type plug and crocodile clips and a generous 9ft of cable which allows for easy installation in most vehicles, or in a shed window for charging low voltage power tools. A pre-drilled hole at each end of the casing means it can easily be secured in position either with screws or a piece of cord / bungey. I have had one of these on my car for several years and am absolutely delighted with it. Because of the nature of my work I stop and start the car several times in the course of a day and seldom make any journeys of more than a mile or so. However thanks to this neat little panel, which sits on the top of the dashboard, I never have a problem with flat batteries, even in winter when there is so much less daylight. It even charges a bit under the flourescent lights in the multi-storey car park! I have used one to recharge a car battery to power a laptop in a remote location (with separate power laptop power adapter). With an output voltage of up to 17.5V at 1.5w in full sunlight (even in the UK) it would probably work ok to charge a 16v laptop battery without any further power adapters.The only downsides - although the outer case is made of strong abs plastic, the photovotaic panel itself is made of glass and so it may not be robust enough to take backpacking or similar. Also I don't know how waterproof it would be so might not be suitable for use in an exposed situation, such as a boat, unless installed inside a cabin window. For marine use the crocodile clips and plus connectors would be better made of brass rather than chromed steel. Nevertheless this is a great little unit for the very modest price.
